The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the deaths of at least 60 newborns during the first three weeks of August 2026 at Malda Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, which included ten deaths on a single day. Observing that these reports raise serious issues of human rights violations if true, the Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The media report also noted that 44 of the deceased newborns were referred from other medical facilities after their health deteriorated.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted two intelligence-led operations along India's North-Eastern frontier in Assam and Mizoram, resulting in the seizure of 76 kg of methamphetamine tablets. Two separate operations—one intercepting a truck near the Assam-Manipur border with the assistance of the Assam Rifles, and another intercepting a car along the Aizawl–Champhai Road in Mizoram—revealed contraband concealed in specially fabricated cavities within the vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicated that drugs in the Mizoram operation were smuggled from Myanmar through the Zokhawthar–Champhai sector. Two individuals were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, under which methamphetamine is notified as a psychotropic substance.

This Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment release highlights the impact of the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme through the personal journey of Dr. Janaki Sundararajan from Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Dr. Janaki faced financial barriers, difficulties in accessing research materials, and challenges in covering academic expenses during her Ph.D. from 2019 to 2024. After receiving a Senior Research Fellowship of ₹35,000 per month starting in September 2019 under the NFSC Scheme, she overcame financial stress, managed research-related expenses, completed her doctoral studies, and currently works as a Guest Teacher at The Gandhigram Rural Institute.

Sunil Kumar K.P., belonging to the OBC Thiyya community in Kerala, transitioned from a low-paid private driver earning ₹5,000 per month to a self-employed autorickshaw owner through assistance from the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC) Scheme. In 2022, he obtained a term loan of ₹2.69 lakh via the Kerala State Backward Classes Development Corporation (KSBCDC). This financial support enabled him to purchase an autorickshaw, raising his monthly income to approximately ₹20,000 and enhancing his family's financial stability and quality of life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted virtually with the youth of the country via the Khelo India Dialogue on the occasion of National Sports Day, emphasizing sports, physical activity, and India's sporting aspirations. The Central Tool Room & Training Centre (CTTC), Bhubaneswar, operating under the Ministry of MSME, conducted a four-week Summer Internship Training Programme in May and June 2026. The programme trained 8,083 engineering students from 22 States and Union Territories, as well as 26 international students from Sudan and Yemen. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah celebrated Raksha Bandhan in Ahmedabad with girls from his parliamentary constituency suffering from Type-1 diabetes. Highlighting that children with Type-1 diabetes require lifelong insulin injections which impose a significant financial burden on families, the government stated it is providing free insulin for life to such children. In the Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency, children aged 0 to 18 years with Type-1 juvenile diabetes have been ensured benefits through an integrated system covering screening, diagnosis, insulin treatment, monitoring, and follow-up.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is scheduled to hold a two-day 'Open Hearing and Camp Sitting' at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on September 2nd and 3rd, 2026. Chaired by NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian along with Members Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, the event aims to hear cases of alleged human rights violations and bonded labour from the State.
