Nuclear Energy in India

8out of 10

India's nuclear energy programme operates under stringent regulatory oversight, multiple safety layers, and comprehensive emergency preparedness to provide low-carbon electricity and support diverse applications. Currently, India operates 24 nuclear reactors across seven sites with an installed capacity of 8.78 GW, with additional units under construction or preparation, aiming for 100 GW by 2047 under the Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat. Beyond power generation, atomic energy contributes to healthcare, agriculture, food preservation, critical minerals exploration, semiconductor manufacturing, and green hydrogen production. The framework is governed by the SHANTI Act, 2025, and overseen by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), integrating robust design-level safety measures, radioactive waste management, and multi-level emergency response mechanisms.

The Department of Defence Production has implemented reforms to simplify the Defence Export Standard Operating Procedure and the Open General Export Licence framework to reduce procedural burdens and expand global market access. Key changes include dispensing with stakeholder consultations for non-lethal item exports to most destinations and for international tenders and exhibitions. The OGEL framework consolidates three previous SOPs into a single unified SOP, increases its validity from two to three years, expands country coverage to nearly all nations except negative or embargoed ones, introduces provisions for long-term contracts with Foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers, and broadens the range of covered items.

Nuclear Energy Technology in India

8out of 10

India's nuclear energy programme centers on technological self-reliance, an indigenously designed three-stage nuclear power programme, and the utilization of domestic thorium reserves. India operates 24 nuclear power reactors with a total installed capacity of 8.78 GW, alongside 9 units under construction with a combined capacity of 7.5 GW. The Government aims to achieve 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. Key milestones include the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam attaining first criticality in April 2026, marking the start of the second stage. Recent initiatives include the Nuclear Energy Mission (2025–26), the SHANTI Act (2025), and development of indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) like the BSMR-200.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) have signed a five-year agreement to establish an End-to-End Optical Network Test Bed at the C-DOT campus in New Delhi. Funded by DoT, the project aims to bridge the gap between lab-stage innovation and market readiness by providing a real-world testing, validation, and commercialization environment for indigenous optical communication technologies developed by Indian startups and industry players. Structured into a setup phase (years 1–2) and an operations and maintenance phase (years 3–5), the testbed will also serve as a shared national resource for skill development and capacity building in advanced optical networking and Quantum Security technologies.

Ex-Mill Sugar Prices Decline by Around 20%; Retail Prices Begin Downward Movement

7out of 10

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution reports that ex-mill sugar prices have declined by around 20% following proactive government measures to address hoarding, speculation, and artificial supply tightening. A nationwide physical verification drive of sugar mills confirmed comfortable stock availability, revealing that some mills held higher stocks than declared or engaged in short selling. To improve market supply chain flow, the Government announced the replacement of the monthly sugar quota system with a fortnightly allocation system starting in September, requiring mills to sell at least 40% of their allocation in the first week. Additionally, mills must dispatch sold sugar within seven days. Upcoming sugarcane crushing from October and unrestrictive sales of October-produced sugar are expected to further strengthen domestic availability.
