The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the deaths of at least 60 newborns during the first three weeks of August 2026 at Malda Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, which included ten deaths on a single day. Observing that these reports raise serious issues of human rights violations if true, the Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The media report also noted that 44 of the deceased newborns were referred from other medical facilities after their health deteriorated.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted two intelligence-led operations along India's North-Eastern frontier in Assam and Mizoram, resulting in the seizure of 76 kg of methamphetamine tablets. Two separate operations—one intercepting a truck near the Assam-Manipur border with the assistance of the Assam Rifles, and another intercepting a car along the Aizawl–Champhai Road in Mizoram—revealed contraband concealed in specially fabricated cavities within the vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicated that drugs in the Mizoram operation were smuggled from Myanmar through the Zokhawthar–Champhai sector. Two individuals were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, under which methamphetamine is notified as a psychotropic substance.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is scheduled to hold a two-day 'Open Hearing and Camp Sitting' at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on September 2nd and 3rd, 2026. Chaired by NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian along with Members Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, the event aims to hear cases of alleged human rights violations and bonded labour from the State. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah celebrated Raksha Bandhan in Ahmedabad with girls from his parliamentary constituency suffering from Type-1 diabetes. Highlighting that children with Type-1 diabetes require lifelong insulin injections which impose a significant financial burden on families, the government stated it is providing free insulin for life to such children. In the Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency, children aged 0 to 18 years with Type-1 juvenile diabetes have been ensured benefits through an integrated system covering screening, diagnosis, insulin treatment, monitoring, and follow-up.

The National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), Nagpur, organized the valediction ceremony for 'Uttarayan-2026', a seven-week orientation programme for 105 newly promoted Assistant Commissioners of Income Tax representing 20 States and two Union Territories. The Central Tool Room & Training Centre (CTTC), Bhubaneswar, operating under the Ministry of MSME, conducted a four-week Summer Internship Training Programme in May and June 2026. Shri Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury, an Additional Judge, has been appointed as a permanent Judge. Sunil Kumar K.P., belonging to the OBC Thiyya community in Kerala, transitioned from a low-paid private driver earning ₹5,000 per month to a self-employed autorickshaw owner through assistance from the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC) Scheme. In 2022, he obtained a term loan of ₹2.69 lakh via the Kerala State Backward Classes Development Corporation (KSBCDC). This financial support enabled him to purchase an autorickshaw, raising his monthly income to approximately ₹20,000 and enhancing his family's financial stability and quality of life.

This Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment release highlights the impact of the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme through the personal journey of Dr. Janaki Sundararajan from Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Dr. Janaki faced financial barriers, difficulties in accessing research materials, and challenges in covering academic expenses during her Ph.D. from 2019 to 2024. After receiving a Senior Research Fellowship of ₹35,000 per month starting in September 2019 under the NFSC Scheme, she overcame financial stress, managed research-related expenses, completed her doctoral studies, and currently works as a Guest Teacher at The Gandhigram Rural Institute.

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs announced the completion of one year of the restructured Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme, which was approved by the Union Cabinet on 27 August 2025. Originally launched on 1 June 2020, the restructured scheme extends lending up to 31 March 2030, targeting 1.15 crore street vendors. In its first post-restructuring year, 21.86 lakh loans worth ₹6,294 crore were disbursed to 10.56 lakh new beneficiaries. Key updates include the introduction of UPI-linked RuPay Credit Cards, an end-to-end Digital Lending Platform, a Vendor Migration Module, the expansion to Census Towns, the PM SVANidhi Startup Challenge, and plans for 50 Street Food Hubs. Since inception, the scheme has facilitated cumulative disbursements of ₹19,171 crore across more than 1.18 crore loans.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PM-JDY), India’s national mission for financial inclusion launched in 2014, has completed 12 years of implementation. Over this period, PM-JDY accounts have expanded significantly from 14.72 crore in 2015 to 59.09 crore as of August 19, 2026, with 32.92 crore female beneficiaries. Total deposits have surged to ₹3,16,514 crore, and 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued. The scheme provides basic savings accounts with no minimum balance requirement, accident insurance cover, overdraft facilities, and access to various social security and direct benefit transfer schemes, thereby driving broad-based economic participation and poverty reduction.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched on August 28, 2014, has completed 12 years of transforming India's financial inclusion landscape. As of August 19, 2026, the total number of PMJDY accounts reached 59.09 crore, with total deposits amounting to ₹3.17 lakh crore. The initiative ensures basic bank accounts with no minimum balance requirement, free RuPay debit cards with accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh, and an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000. Data shows that 55.7% to 56% of account holders are women, and 77.8% to 78% of accounts are located in rural and semi-urban areas. Serving as the core of the Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) trinity, the scheme enables direct and transparent delivery of welfare benefits to the underprivileged.

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development, has urged States and UTs to converge the works of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 and Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) SBM-(G) 2.0 under the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025.
