The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) July 2026 bulletin shows a rise in overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) to 55.4% (up 1.0 pp from June) and in Rural LFPR to 58.0% (up 1.4 pp). Female LFPR increased to 34.4% (up 1.7 pp). Worker Population Ratio (WPR) rose to 52.5% overall (first increase since Feb 2026) and Rural WPR to 55.4% (up 1.6 pp). Unemployment Rate (UR) fell to 5.1% overall (down from 5.5% in June) and Rural UR to 4.5%. The bulletin is based on a sample of 3,71,021 persons (2,11,411 rural, 1,59,610 urban).

On 17 August 2026, India unveiled its first Guide to Grasslands and Other Open Natural Ecosystems (ONEs) at the UNCCD COP‑17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The guide, prepared under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, documents the geographical settings, ecological traits, biodiversity, and associated communities of India’s grasslands, savannas, deserts, scrublands and related ecosystems. It highlights their role in carbon sequestration, soil‑water processes, and livelihoods of pastoral and agricultural communities, and links their restoration to India’s Land Degradation Neutrality targets. The launch, organized with ATREE, IUCN, ICFRE, ISRO‑SAC and other partners, emphasized science‑based conservation and the need to integrate ONEs into mainstream land‑degradation and climate‑resilience policies.

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, through the Development and Welfare Board for De‑notified, Nomadic and Semi‑Nomadic Communities (DWBDNC), is implementing the Scheme for Economic Empowerment of DNTs (SEED). Established in February 2019 after the National Commission’s 2017 report, the SEED scheme has four components – education, healthcare, livelihoods and housing – and provides quality coaching for competitive exams, health‑insurance cover, community‑level livelihood initiatives and financial assistance for house construction for eligible members of De‑notified, Nomadic and Semi‑Nomadic (DNT/NT/SNT) communities. The government reiterates its commitment to strengthening welfare and development interventions for these groups via DWBDNC and SEED.

The National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste (NFSC) scheme provided Sangeeta Das—a 34‑year‑old Scheduled Caste scholar—₹31,000 per month from 30 November 2020, enabling her to complete her Ph.D. despite research pressures, experimental failures, strict publication deadlines, and family responsibilities, including caring for a newborn and a father with dementia. The fellowship’s financial and academic support allowed her to continue her work in semiconductor and chip‑design technologies and later secure a position as Project Associate II under the Chips to Startup Programme, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the Ruby and Silver Jubilee Valedictory Celebrations of SASTRA Deemed University in Thanjavur, praising the institution as a leading higher‑education centre in Tamil Nadu. He reiterated that the National Education Policy 2020 is a guiding pillar for education from KG to Ph.D., and cited the government’s target to raise the higher‑education Gross Enrolment Ratio from the current 30 % to 50 % by 2035. The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) observed the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign 2026 from 9 – 17 August 2026, a programme launched by the Government of India in 2022 under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to encourage citizens to hoist the National Flag. On 13 August 2026 the Ministry organised a special event where the Secretary distributed the Tiranga to officers, highlighted the 150th anniversary of the National Song “Vande Mataram”, and urged participation in the “Selfie with Tiranga” initiative via www.harghartiranga.com. Under India’s BRICS Chairmanship for 2026, the Department of Telecommunications will host the BRICS ICT Track in Pune from 17‑21 August 2026. The five‑day programme, themed “Innovate, Cooperate and Transform (ICT) for a Resilient Future”, will comprise three key events – the 7th BRICS Working Group Meeting on ICT cooperation, the Digital BRICS Forum & Expo, and the 12th BRICS Communications Ministers Meeting. Delegates will discuss priority areas such as universal and sustainable connectivity, secure and human‑centric digital environments, digital skills, innovation, startups, AI, cybersecurity, and child online protection. Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia will represent India at the Ministers’ Meeting.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, interacted with MY Bharat‑NSS volunteers during the Independence Day celebrations at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi. Vice‑President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed a national seminar on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, organised by the Centre for Independence and Partition Studies, University of Delhi, and ICHR. He highlighted that the 1947 Partition involved one of the largest mass migrations in human history and caused widespread displacement, loss of civilisational sites and enduring disputes. The Ministry of Jal Shakti clarified that the Ken–Betwa Link Project – India’s first major river‑linking scheme under the National Perspective Plan – aims to transfer surplus water from the Ken River to the Betwa River to irrigate 10.62 lakh hectares, supply drinking water to nearly 62 lakh people and generate 103 MW of hydropower in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Of the estimated ₹44,604.99 crore cost, ₹12,445.85 crore has been spent up to July 2026. On 14 August 2026, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) marked the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga 2026’ campaign by organising a mass singing of the National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ at Indira Paryavaran Bhawan, New Delhi, led by Secretary Shri Tanmay Kumar. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) policy has set measurable targets for scale‑up of bio‑manufacturing to replace fossil‑based inputs. It launched the digital portal ‘Sujivika’ to provide biotech import data, aiding import substitution and domestic production of bio‑based products. DBT has funded research, pilot‑scale and demonstration projects that convert agricultural residues, municipal organic waste and industrial biogenic waste into advanced fuels, chemicals and materials, supporting circular bio‑economy and low‑carbon objectives.
