The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted an intelligence-led operation at Nava Sheva Port between August 16 and 17, 2026, successfully busting a transnational drug trafficking attempt. The operation led to the seizure of around 56 kg of methamphetamine in powdery form, which was concealed by being mixed with maize in an export consignment bound for Saudi Arabia. Two individuals—the exporter and the transporter/freight forwarder—were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The concealment method highlights a novel modus operandi used by traffickers to disguise illicit drugs as ordinary agricultural commodities to evade detection.

The 2nd India–Malaysia Joint Working Group Meeting on Cooperation in the Field of Public Administration and Governance Reforms was held on August 18, 2026. Co-chaired by representatives from the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) of India and the Public Service Department of Malaysia, the meeting reviewed progress since the first meeting in November 2024. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the upgradation of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22 in Bihar to a four-lane standard. To be developed on the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total capital cost of Rs. 3,590.73 crore, the 82.578 km long project aims to act as a key feeder corridor connecting the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa with economic centers like Muzaffarpur. Planned in accordance with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the project includes provisions for bridges, ROBs, and flyovers to improve regional mobility, freight movement, cross-border trade, and access to cultural and religious destinations.

Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh concluded a two-day official visit to Armenia from August 17-18, 2026. During the visit, he held bilateral meetings with Armenian leadership including the Minister of Defence, First Deputy Defence Minister and Chief of General Staff, Deputy Defence Minister, Minister of Hi-tech Industry, and Deputy Foreign Minister. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved four railway multi-tracking projects covering eight districts across West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, with an estimated cost of Rs. 9,450 crore. Scheduled for completion by 2030-31, the projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 410 kilometres across routes such as Kharagpur–Bhadrak, Bhadrak–Haridaspur, Gummidipundi–Gudur, and Cuttack–Paradeep. Planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the initiative aims to enhance line capacity, reduce congestion, improve multi-modal logistics, and support the transportation of bulk commodities like coal, iron ore, and food grains, generating an additional freight traffic capacity of 76 MTPA.

The Government of India is strengthening residential education and hostel facilities for Scheduled Caste (SC) and tribal students through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY), the Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA), and Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS). Under PM-AJAY, two SC hostels with a combined capacity of 500 seats were sanctioned in Hyderabad, with ₹7.50 crore released. Additionally, SHRESHTA supports meritorious SC students via private school fee reimbursements and grants to NGOs. For tribal students, all 23 sanctioned EMRSs in Telangana are functional, benefiting 10,199 students, alongside nationwide approvals and institutional monitoring mechanisms.

The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has extended financial assistance to M/s OrthoGraft Pvt. Ltd. in Vadodara, Gujarat, for the commercialization and production setup of advanced tissue-derived biological dressings. The startup focuses on developing indigenous tissue substitutes for wound-care applications such as chronic wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, and burns. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the physical assault of two men from Manipur in the Munirka area of Delhi. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a wildlife trafficking syndicate at Lucknow, seizing 54 ivory artefacts—including various animal and human figurines as well as household items of commercial and antique value—and arresting four individuals. The seized items and suspects were handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department. The Ministry highlights that the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 prohibits trade in elephant ivory, aligning with India's obligations under CITES. This note highlights the role of the National Fellowship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students in supporting the PhD journey of Shri Badde Prasanna Kumar in Agriculture Microbiology. Coming from a financially constrained background, Prasanna Kumar faced multiple challenges, including research uncertainties, experimental failures, and the management of academic expenses. Starting in 2017, he received financial assistance of ₹35,000 per month under the fellowship scheme, which helped him overcome economic barriers, maintain stability, and focus on his scientific research without major financial stress. The assistance enabled him to successfully complete his doctorate and work as a Research Associate in agricultural sciences.

The meeting of the Hindi Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Rural Development was held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education has extended the online registration deadline for Yuva Sangam Phase VII until August 31, 2026. Yuva Sangam is a youth exchange programme under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) initiative, designed for youth aged 18 to 30 years, including higher education students, NSS/NYKS volunteers, and young professionals. The programme features 20 nodal Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) hosting five to seven day educational and cultural tours to paired States and Union Territories.
