On 20 July 2026 India deposited its Instrument of Acceptance for the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS), becoming the 123rd WTO Member to join the pact. The Agreement, adopted in June 2022 and effective from 15 September 2025, targets subsidies linked to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and over‑exploited stocks, aiming to protect marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of traditional and small‑scale fishers. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken suo motu action against 41 restaurants nationwide for automatically levying service charge without consumers’ explicit consent, based on complaints filed through the National Consumer Helpline. Investigations found the practice breached the Guidelines to Prevent Unfair Trade Practices (issued 4 July 2022) and amounted to an unfair trade practice under Section 2(47) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The Delhi High Court (28 March 2025) upheld these guidelines, declaring mandatory service‑charge collection illegal. CCPA imposed a ₹50,000 penalty on Chaayos and ordered reimbursement of collected charges, directing the firm to modify its billing software. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has received Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approval to upgrade the Khagaria‑Purnea stretch of NH‑31 and NH‑231 in Bihar to a four‑lane highway at a cost of Rs. 3936.05 crore. The project aims to cut travel time from about 3.5‑4 hours to 1.5‑2 hours, incorporate flood‑resilient engineering (improved geometry, stronger pavement, modern drainage) and alleviate congestion in Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnea districts. It will link five PM Gati Shakti economic nodes (one textile cluster, two mega food parks, two fishing/seafood parks) and 11 logistics nodes (four rail stations, one airport, four national highways, two state highways), thereby enhancing multimodal connectivity for Bihar’s banana and makhana producers and strengthening links with West Bengal and Jharkhand.

On the 98th Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced a roadmap for ‘Viksit Krishi and Samruddh Kisan’ under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. Key initiatives include developing 100 Climate‑Smart Villages, a ‘One Institute‑One Grand Innovation’ mandate for each ICAR institute, and ensuring ICAR technologies reach 100 million farmers. The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment reports that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), launched on 15 August 2020, has now reached over 29.32 crore citizens, including more than 11.20 crore youth and 7.92 crore women, through more than 21 lakh awareness activities in schools, colleges and universities. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved two railway multitracking projects – Paradeep‑Haridaspur doubling and Rajkharsawan‑Dangoaposi 4th line – covering four districts in Odisha and Jharkhand. With an estimated cost of about Rs 3,907 crore, the projects will add roughly 145 km to the Indian Railways network and are slated for completion by 2030‑31. Scientists at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, under the Department of Science and Technology have created a hybrid vanadium oxide‑vanadium sulfide (VOx/VS2) ammonia sensor that detects ammonia as low as 319 ppb at room temperature. The sensor shows high selectivity, stable operation over ten weeks, and works across a wide concentration range. Prototypes include portable threshold‑triggered monitors, self‑powered devices powered by a flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator, and wearable versions on polymer, paper and textile substrates. These devices can alert users to unsafe ammonia levels in industrial, laboratory and agricultural settings, enabling real‑time safety monitoring without external power sources.

The Ministry of Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on 680 route kilometres covering the Rewari‑Delhi and Shakurbasti‑Bathinda sections, including feeder branches, of the Delhi Division, Northern Railway. The project, costing ₹206 crore, is part of the nationwide rollout of India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. Kavach is designed to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions by continuously monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when required, thereby enhancing safety, operational efficiency and reliability even in adverse weather such as dense fog.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) was declared the global winner of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2026 under Action Line C6 – Enabling Environment for its flagship project “Samriddh Gram: Integrated Phygital Service Delivery Model Enabled by BharatNet.” The award was presented at the WSIS Forum 2026 in Geneva and recognises the initiative’s use of BharatNet’s rural broadband to deliver health, education, financial, agricultural and e‑governance services through village‑level Samriddhi Kendras.
