The Ministry of Railways reports that 99.6% of Indian Railways’ broad‑gauge network has been electrified, placing India second only to Switzerland (100%) in railway electrification coverage, according to the International Union of Railways (UIC) June 2025 report. Diesel consumption for traction fell from 293 crore litres in 2015‑16 to 108 crore litres in 2024‑25, saving foreign‑exchange and cutting CO₂ emissions, as rail emits about 89 % less CO₂ than road transport (11.5 g vs 101 g per tonne‑km). About 1,161 MW of solar and 103 MW of wind capacity have been commissioned for rail operations. All new line and multi‑tracking projects are being built with electrification, and zone‑wise electrification exceeds 96 % across the country.

Bharat 6G Alliance and Spectrum Roadmap for 6G in India

8out of 10

The Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA), an industry‑academia society, grew to 90 members by 15 July 2026 and has set up seven working groups covering 6G technologies, spectrum, applications, devices, green aspects and outreach. Its spectrum working group submitted a report titled “Spectrum Roadmap for 6G in India”, and the Department of Telecommunications released a corresponding roadmap online. A three‑year project funded by the Telecom Technology Development Fund under Digital Bharat Nidhi will create a 6G Terahertz testbed at SAMEER, Kolkata, in partnership with IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Patna; a high‑data‑rate line‑of‑sight link was demonstrated at India Mobile Congress 2025. India has contributed to the ITU’s IMT‑2030 (6G) framework and, through the TDIP scheme, supports Indian stakeholders’ participation in 3GPP, ITU and oneM2M, with financial aid for memberships, meetings and pilot testing for startups and MSMEs. The information was provided by Union MoS Dr C S Pemmasani in a Lok Sabha reply.

The Union Health Ministry has expanded the nationwide Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) network to 163 labs (11 regional, 27 state and 125 medical college labs) to boost diagnostic capacity. Four Regional Next‑Generation Sequencing (NGS) hubs and Infectious Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratories have been set up for decentralized diagnostics and genomic characterization of pathogens. Coordination between central and state health authorities is being reinforced through real‑time surveillance under IDSP/IHIP, information sharing and joint outbreak response, with mechanisms tested via simulation exercises and mock drills. The Ministry also launched the Pradhan Mantri‑Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM‑ABHIM) to strengthen primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities for future emergencies.

8out of 10

The PIB backgrounder ‘White Gold: India’s Cotton Story’ (20 July 2026) details India’s dominant position in the global cotton market – first in cultivated area (114.84 lakh ha, ~38 % of world area) and second in production (290.91 lakh bales, provisional, 2025‑26) and consumption (328 lakh bales). The sector supports ~6 million farmers and 40‑50 million workers, contributes ~19 % of global fibre output, and earned US$ 11.49 billion in export value (FY 25). Key policy measures include MSP operations via the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) – MSP set at Rs 7,710/8,110 ₹/quintal (2025‑26) and increased to Rs 8,267/8,667 ₹/quintal (2026‑27) – and the Mission for Cotton Productivity (Rs 5,659.22 crore) aiming to raise output to 498 lakh bales by 2031. Technological interventions such as the High‑Density Planting System, Closer Spacing System, and the Kapas Kisan app are improving yields (30‑40 % gains) and procurement transparency. The Kasturi Cotton Bharat branding programme (Rs 30 crore) provides QR‑based certification and blockchain traceability for long‑staple cotton.

Indian Railways will flag off the country’s first hydrogen fuel‑cell trainset – a 10‑coach passenger train with a capacity of about 2,600 passengers. The train generates electricity onboard by reacting hydrogen with oxygen, emitting only water vapour. It can run at an operational speed of 75 km/h (design speed 110 km/h) on the 89 km Jind–Sonipat section. A dedicated hydrogen production, storage (≈3,000 kg), compression and dispensing facility at Jind supports the train, and the system incorporates multi‑layer safety devices and has been certified by TÜV SÜD and PESO. The trainset, developed indigenously by RDSO, Medha Servo Drives and ICF, showcases India’s push for sustainable mobility and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
