The transaction involves the sale of a 60.72% total shareholding, split between the Government of India (30.48%) and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (30.24%). Post-transaction, the Government of India will retain a 15% residual stake and LIC will retain a 19% residual stake. The transaction represents the largest Foreign Direct Investment in India's financial sector to date, expected to infuse private capital, technology, and management practices into the bank.

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) for a five-year period from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total financial outlay of Rs. 53,428 crore. The programme and its sub-schemes have been renamed: NSAP becomes Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana; IGNOAPS becomes Pradhan Mantri Vridhavastha Pension Yojana; IGNWPS becomes Pradhan Mantri Vidhawa Pension Yojana; IGNDPS becomes Pradhan Mantri Divyangjan Pension Yojana; and the National Family Benefit Scheme becomes Pradhan Mantri Parivar Labh Yojana. Furthermore, the disability pension scheme has been revised to lower the benchmark disability criteria from 80% to 40%, set the minimum age criterion to since birth, and adjust assistance rates, while old-age, widow, and family benefit schemes continue in their existing forms.

The Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojna (BHAVYA) is a ₹33,660 crore initiative designed to develop 100 plug-and-play industrial parks across India. Approved by the Cabinet in March 2026 and notified on 10 April 2026, the scheme provides financial assistance of up to ₹1 crore per acre for creating modern industrial infrastructure, trunk utilities, common facilities, and ICT-enabled administration. Implemented in partnership with States and private developers over six years from FY2026–27 to FY2031–32, BHAVYA aims to reduce entry-level barriers, streamline approvals via single-window systems, support MSMEs, and accelerate the transition from investment to production in the manufacturing sector.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the strategic restructuring and sale of an aggregate 60.72% equity stake in IDBI Bank Ltd. to M/s 10955230 Canada Inc. (parent entity M/s Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd.) for a purchase consideration of Rs. 52,878.0806181 Crores. The transaction involves selling 30.48% of the Government of India's share and 30.24% of LIC's share, leaving residual shareholdings of 15% and 19% respectively. Implemented through a competitive bidding process managed by institutional mechanisms like the Inter-Ministerial Group and Core Group of Secretaries on Disinvestment, the winning best offer bid of Rs. 81 per share exceeded the benchmark fair valuation price of Rs. 75.99 per share. Upon completion, this will mark the largest Foreign Direct Investment in India's financial sector.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh addressed the 1st ASEAN-India Defence Think Tank Forum in New Delhi, highlighting India's vision for an open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. The Indian Navy successfully completed its maiden Command of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154), a multinational maritime training Task Force under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), following a relinquishment ceremony in Manama, Bahrain, on October 14, 2026. Over its eight-month tenure starting February 11, 2026, the Indian Navy-led CTF 154 conducted numerous initiatives including Staff Enhancement Training engagements, two major multinational exercises (Operation Compass Rose 26-1 and Operation Southern Readiness 26-2 hosted in Kochi), and the inaugural Subject Matter Expert Exchange on Piracy and Armed Robbery (SPAR 2026). These engagements involved personnel from dozens of countries and generated thousands of training hours focusing on contemporary maritime security challenges. India joined CMF as an Associate Partner in 2022 and became a full member in 2023.

The Ministry of Cooperation has mandated the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Auditor’s Report) Order, 2026 (MSCARO, 2026) to introduce a uniform, structured, and risk-based statutory audit reporting framework for Multi-State Cooperative Societies. Formulated under Section 73(6) of the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Act, 2023, and modeled on the corporate sector's CARO, the framework requires auditors to report on key financial, governance, and statutory parameters using a standardized Yes/No format with remarks. The initiative aims to enhance financial transparency, early detection of financial stress (including NPAs and liquidity positions), safeguard members' funds, and enable technology-driven regulatory oversight via integration with the CRCS Portal. Implementation is phased, beginning with larger societies crossing a threshold of ₹1,000 crore before extending to those crossing ₹50 crore.

Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar (Retd.), Chairman of the High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes (HLCDC), launched the official web portal (https://demography.mha.gov.in) in New Delhi. Constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 26, 2026, the portal enables Central Ministries, State/UT Governments, NGOs, institutions, and individuals to submit inputs on unnatural demographic changes, underlying factors, and abnormal settlement patterns. These inputs will assist the Committee in studying challenges related to demographic shifts and illegal immigration, analyzing structural population changes, and recommending a permanent operational system for the legal, fair, and time-bound identification, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants, alongside measures for institutional mechanisms and border management coordination.

The Central Government has approved India’s accession to the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA), transitioning from a Cooperating Non-Contracting Party to a full Contracting Party. Following the December 2025 Guidelines for High Sea Fisheries, this step provides a regional framework to expand India’s fishing fleet into international waters, secure legitimate rights for sustainable harvesting of high-value marine resources like squids, toothfish, and alfonsino, and advance India's Blue Economy. The accession enables India to participate fully in SIOFA's decision-making bodies, Scientific Committee, and Compliance Committee, collaborate on scientific research, combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and engage in the High Seas Boarding and Inspection (HSBI) Scheme to strengthen coastal security.

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, organized a virtual conference with States and UTs focusing on the convergence of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 with VB-G RAM G. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and dedicate five major development projects worth around ₹3,350 crore in Ladakh. The projects encompass the new passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road constructed by the Border Roads Organisation, the 9 MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project alongside a transmission line, India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat, and 40 water bodies under Project Him Sarovar. The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology signed an agreement with ideaForge Technology Limited to provide ₹151 crore in debt financing support under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The total project cost is ₹302 crore, aimed at developing 'YETI', a heavy-lift, long-range autonomous vertical take-off and landing fixed-wing hybrid unmanned aerial vehicle (VTOL-FW UAV). The project aims to advance the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-4 to TRL-9. Designed to transport payloads of up to 200 kg across a targeted range of 200 km at altitudes up to 6,500 metres, YETI is engineered for challenging operating environments such as high-altitude regions, deserts, and marine conditions.

India is the world's largest producer and exporter of coir, accounting for about two-thirds of global production with a turnover of approximately ₹16,000 crore and contributing close to 1% to the GDP. In FY 2025-26, exports reached ₹6,614.40 crore, driven by major markets such as the US, China, Netherlands, Spain, and the UK. The sector comprises over 21,000 registered coir units under the Udyam portal, employing over 7 lakh workers overall, with 80% being rural women. The Ministry of MSME implements the Coir Vikas Yojana (CVY) to support technological development, skill training, and market promotion. Over the past 12 years, exports have risen by 305.70%, and thousands of individuals have received skill training through initiatives like the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted 'Operation Deep Manifest' between September 26 and October 11, 2026, busting an illegal import network bringing Pakistan-origin rock salt into India. The DRI detected 295 containers carrying 7,311 metric tonnes of rock salt valued at around Rs. 30 crore, routed through Colombo Port, Sri Lanka, using fabricated certificates of origin and invoices from UAE-based entities to circumvent India's import prohibition. Searches were conducted across multiple cities, leading to the seizure of five containers at Kandla Port, Rs. 20.96 lakh in sales proceeds, and the arrest of four individuals under the Customs Act, 1962. The complete prohibition on goods originating from Pakistan was enacted by the Government of India in May 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attack.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, through the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC), is implementing the BHARAT TULIP (Traditional Artisans’ Upliftment Livelihood Programme) launched on November 5, 2024. The initiative aims to strengthen the livelihoods of traditional artisans by expanding market access, improving product visibility, and connecting them with customers in India and abroad through digital platforms, e-commerce channels, and trade exhibitions. The programme brands traditional products under 'BHARAT TULIP' to enhance online sales, recognition, and sustainable livelihoods while supporting skill development, quality assurance, and logistics. It showcases items such as home décor, handcrafted jewellery, handwoven textiles, and traditional leather products.

The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), operating under the Ministry of Finance, conducted a major month-long operation named “Operation Parivartan” in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. During the operation, CBN destroyed 5,165 acres of illicit cannabis cultivation utilizing drone technology, ground surveys, and the assistance of the Forest and Police Departments. Operating in challenging Himalayan terrain up to altitudes of 3,500 metres, teams targeted remote locations to dismantle the narcotics supply chain at its source. Following the operation, CBN officers engaged in a public dialogue (Jan Samvad) in Malana village to encourage alternative crop development in accordance with the NDPS Policy 2012.

The Indian Navy is scheduled to relinquish Command of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154) at Manama, Bahrain, marking the completion of its maiden command of a Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) Task Force. India joined CMF as an Associate Partner in 2022, became a full member in 2023, and assumed command of CTF 154 on February 11, 2026. During this tenure, CTF 154 delivered a sustained multinational training program under the Maritime Domain Enhancement Training framework, generating over 7,800 training hours across 39 participating countries through staff engagements, specific operations like Operation Compass Rose 26-1 and Operation Southern Readiness 26-2, and the inaugural Subject Matter Expert Exchange on Piracy and Armed Robbery (SPAR 2026).

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman is undertaking an official visit to Bangkok, Thailand, from October 14th to 18th, 2026. During the visit, she will attend the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, as well as G20 and G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meetings. Her schedule includes bilateral discussions with counterparts from Thailand, Switzerland, Japan, Luxembourg, Bhutan, and Curaçao, alongside meetings with the IMF Managing Director and the Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry released the provisional Wholesale Price Index (WPI), Output Producer Price Index (PPI), and trial Input PPI for September 2026, alongside final indices for July 2026. The All-India WPI inflation for September 2026 stood at 11.39 per cent year-on-year, compared to 9.92 per cent in August 2026, with the All Commodities index at 112.5. Major groups including Primary Articles, Fuel and Power, and Manufactured Products recorded year-on-year inflation rates of 8.67 per cent, 25.85 per cent, and 9.76 per cent respectively. Additionally, the provisional All-India Output PPI for All Commodities stood at 112.5, and the trial Input PPI for the manufacturing sector stood at 106.1 for September 2026.
