The National Zoological Park in New Delhi organized the 2nd edition of the 'Tree Walk' and the 11th 'Sunday Bird Walk' on August 23, 2026, as part of its Citizen Science Initiative. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced the unanimous adoption of the 'Chennai Declaration' and 'Chennai Consensus' during the closing session of the 14th BRICS Science Ministerial Meet chaired by India. The declaration reaffirms BRICS commitment to build an effective, resilient, and future-ready framework in science, technology, and innovation (STI), placing a people-centred, humanity-first approach at the heart of cooperation. The agenda emphasizes the Global South, young innovators, collaborative research, shared research infrastructure including the BRICS Global Research Advanced Infrastructure Network (BRICS GRAIN), the BRICS Science and Research Repository, and the BRICS Youth Startup Platform across various emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, quantum technologies, and biotechnology.

Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah chaired a security review meeting regarding the Siliguri Corridor, attended by senior central and state officials, the Army, BSF, SSB, RPF, and the Chief Minister and DGP of West Bengal. The Multi Agency Centre's Standing Focus Group on Siliguri Corridor presented progress and recommendations. Discussions covered critical infrastructural projects, PIO activities, demographic changes, illegal immigration, and border affairs. The Home Minister stressed a quadrangular approach to border security, directed agencies to increase their footprints and secure vital installations, ordered the corridor kept free of encroachments, and suggested opening more Sainik schools, increasing senior NCC cadets, and strengthening civil defense and home guards in North Bengal.

The National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP), launched in September 2019, is a major Indian livestock health initiative designed to control and eradicate Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis through nationwide vaccination, sero-surveillance, and digital integration. Subsumed under the revised Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) for the financial year 2026–27 with a budget outlay of ₹2,010 crore, the programme features biannual mass FMD vaccination and one-time Brucellosis vaccination for bovine calves. Interventions are supported by the Bharat Pashudhan Portal for animal registration, 4,019 operational Mobile Veterinary Units for doorstep service delivery, ICAR research institutions, and the National One Health Mission. Measurable outcomes include a cumulative administration of 147.16 crore FMD vaccine doses, a decline in reported FMD outbreaks from 132 in 2019 to 40 by 2025, and Brucellosis outbreaks falling from 22 in 2019 to 15 in 2025.

A meeting was held in Siliguri under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah and in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari, along with various stakeholders and representatives of the hill areas of West Bengal. The discussions covered issues concerning the hill population, including demands for a distinct identity, a permanent political solution, and recognition under the Constitution of India. The Union Home Minister promised a permanent political solution soon under the constitutional umbrella, along with adequate central funding for pending issues. A committee chaired by Shri Pankaj Kumar Singh, former deputy National Security Advisor and current interlocutor, was decided to be formed to finalize the modalities for the final agreement.

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment organized a National Workshop titled “Mission Zero – Ending Fatalities in Sanitation Work” in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The workshop focused on strengthening institutional mechanisms, promoting mechanised sanitation services, ensuring operational preparedness, and eliminating hazardous manual sanitation practices. Dignitaries emphasized a whole-of-government approach to guarantee safe, systematic, and dignified sanitation services. Schemes such as NAMASTE and GARIMA were highlighted for promoting mechanization, occupational safety, health, education, and livelihood opportunities for sanitation workers and their dependents.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has urged establishments to use the Employees’ Enrolment Campaign, 2026 (EEC 2026), notified with effect from 29 June 2026. This campaign offers a one-time opportunity to enrol eligible workers left outside EPF coverage between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2026. Running until 31 October 2026, the initiative aims to extend provident fund, pension, and insurance benefits by facilitating voluntary employer compliance. It includes relaxations such as the waiver of the employee’s share when not previously deducted. Employers must complete the process online, generating a Face Authentication-based UAN via the UMANG App and remitting contributions through the Electronic Challan-cum-Return.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Hardeep Singh Puri undertook an official visit to Mauritius from August 20-21, 2026. During the visit, a Government-to-Government MoU on oil and gas cooperation was exchanged in the presence of the Prime Minister of Mauritius. Additionally, a five-year Sales and Purchase agreement was signed between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the State Trading Corporation (STC) of Mauritius, under which IOCL will supply the entire import requirement of Mauritius for Motor Spirit, High Speed Diesel, and Aviation Turbine Fuel. The visit also featured the groundbreaking ceremony for a bunker marine fuel storage facility at Port Louis and the joint launch of the Biofuels Country Landscape Policy framework under the Global Biofuels Alliance.

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has released ₹2.82 crores under the Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) mechanism derived from the utilization of India's biological resources. This includes ₹2.80 crores disbursed to 27 State Biodiversity Boards and 3 Union Territory Biodiversity Councils based on the cultivation footprint of specific horticultural crop hybrids where original benefit claimers could not be individually traced. Additionally, ₹2.01 lakh was released to the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Karnataka, following commercial utilization of microbial strains. The funds are earmarked for conservation, documentation through People's Biodiversity Registers, and livelihood enhancement under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 framework.

The Empowered Committee of the Ministry of Rural Development reviewed proposals under the Non-Farm Livelihoods component of DAY-NRLM to accelerate the growth of women-led rural enterprises. The meeting considered four new incubator proposals from Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, partnering with IIT Patna, IIM Jammu, IIM Lucknow, and IIT Gandhinagar respectively, to support over 600 high-potential enterprises. Additionally, proposals for expanding the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme in West Bengal and Goa were evaluated. The BRICS Youth Ministers’ Meeting 2026 concluded in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, following related events in Gandhinagar. Presided over by India's Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, the meeting brought together youth representatives, policymakers, and delegations from BRICS member and partner countries. A key outcome was the adoption of a Joint Statement focusing on areas like education, skills, entrepreneurship, innovation, volunteering, health, environment, and youth inclusion. The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully concluded its participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia and Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 in Malaysia. During Exercise Pitch Black 2026, hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force, the IAF deployed Rafale aircraft to participate in Large Force Employment missions alongside air forces from over 20 nations. Subsequently, the IAF contingent deployed to Malaysia for Exercise Udara Shakti 2026, conducting joint tactical manoeuvres and high-intensity combat sorties alongside the Royal Malaysian Air Force using Su-30MKM and F/A-18 Hornet aircraft. Both exercises focused on enhancing interoperability, tactical coordination, and strategic defence partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has restricted the manufacture, sale, and distribution of all Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs) containing Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, requiring a mandatory warning that they shall not be used in children below four years of age. This follows an earlier notification from April 2025 that restricted certain formulations, and has now been extended to all formulations containing these ingredients. The decision is based on recommendations from an Expert Committee and the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB), due to potential risks and the availability of safer alternatives. Manufacturers must clearly display the warning on labels, package inserts, and promotional literature under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

The Ministry of Defence announced the delivery of 'Mangrol', the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi, to the Indian Navy on August 21, 2026. The vessel features over 80 percent indigenous content and is equipped for underwater surveillance, coastal Anti-Submarine Warfare operations, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations, and mine warfare capabilities. Propelled by waterjets, it carries state-of-the-art torpedoes, Anti-Submarine rockets, and advanced radars and sonars. The ship is named after the coastal town and minor port of Mangrol in Gujarat and continues the legacy of the erstwhile INS Mangrol.

Union Textiles Minister Shri Giriraj Singh visited the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai, to interact with students and inaugurate a new facility of the Bunakar Seva Kendra (Weavers' Service Centre) at the NIFT Mumbai Campus, Kharghar. Accompanied by senior officials including the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) and the Textile Commissioner, the Minister encouraged students to contribute to employment generation, exports, and foreign exchange earnings. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced seven new career-focused programmes for the July 2026 session, including courses in climate change, women's and gender studies, environmental studies, rural studies, and criminal justice social work. Additionally, the IGNOU Regional Centre in Nagpur facilitated the admission of 75 jail inmates from Central Jail Nagpur and Central Jail Amravati to enable higher education through Open and Distance Learning.
