Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)‑based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) pilot for the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Chandigarh on 14 August 2026. The Ministry of Defence announced the gallantry awards conferred on Army personnel on Independence Day 2026. Three Kirti Chakras (including one post‑humous) were awarded, along with one Bar to Shaurya Chakra, eleven Shaurya Chakras (including one post‑humous), five Bars to Sena Medal (Gallantry) and thirty‑six Sena Medals (Gallantry) (five post‑humous). The Logistics Data Bank (LDB), launched in 2016, has tracked 10 crore export‑import containers, offering 100 percent visibility of container movement across India through RFID‑based technology. It covers 19 ports, 32 terminals, 103 inland container depots, 439 freight stations, 5,569 railway stations, 269 toll plazas and three Integrated Check Posts, among other facilities. LDB 2.0, introduced in September 2025, added high‑seas tracking and multimodal shipment visibility. The platform uses RFID, IoT, big‑data and cloud technologies to provide near‑real‑time analytics on dwell time, transit time and terminal performance. The World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index has recognised LDB’s contribution to India’s logistics performance. The service averages over 1.5 crore container searches per month and is accessible via the single‑window portal www.ldb.co.in. NICDSL, a joint venture between the Government of India and NEC Corporation, manages the platform.

Vice‑President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed a national seminar on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, organised by the Centre for Independence and Partition Studies, University of Delhi, and ICHR. He highlighted that the 1947 Partition involved one of the largest mass migrations in human history and caused widespread displacement, loss of civilisational sites and enduring disputes. The Vice‑President praised the Centre’s effort in recording oral testimonies of over a hundred survivors and urged that the tragedy be remembered to foster unity, responsible leadership and national security. He also felicitated 15 survivors and administered a ‘No Drugs’ pledge to students.

The PIB Backgrounder dated 14 August 2026 outlines the Government’s multi‑pronged effort to revitalise India’s cultural heritage. Key schemes include Adopt A Heritage 2.0 (30 MoUs signed by March 2026, 13.59 million visitors in FY 2024‑25), PRASHAD (54 projects sanctioned, 32 completed, costing ₹1,726.74 crore), Swadesh Darshan (15 thematic circuits, 76 projects sanctioned, ₹5,290.33 crore investment) and its 2.0 version (53 projects, ₹2,208.31 crore). Digitisation initiatives such as Gyan Bharatam (₹482.85 crore outlay) and museum digitisation (3,75,707 artefacts digitised by July 2026) leverage AI, LiDAR and GIS to enhance access and conservation.

The Government of India has launched a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)‑based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) in the Union Territories of Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Under this system, food subsidies are credited directly to beneficiaries’ Digital Rupee wallets and can be spent only on foodgrains at empanelled merchants via QR‑code or OTP‑based payments. The initiative promises instant, purpose‑bound transfers, digital transaction records, reduced cash handling, and greater transparency, building on earlier pilots in Gujarat and Puducherry and on existing digital infrastructure such as Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and UPI.

The Ministry of Electronics & IT reports that Software Technology Parks (STP) under the STP Scheme – a 100 % export‑oriented programme – recorded total exports of ₹7.73 lakh crore in FY 2025‑26, up from ₹6.36 lakh crore in FY 2023‑24. The number of STP units rose to 2,125 in FY 2025‑26. State‑wise, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu together contributed over ₹8 lakh crore in exports. STPI has streamlined approvals through automation of statutory services, integrated its online system with RBI’s Export Data Processing and Monitoring System, and replaced case‑by‑case import permissions with blanket permissions, thereby enhancing ease of doing business for IT exporters.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti clarified that the Ken–Betwa Link Project – India’s first major river‑linking scheme under the National Perspective Plan – aims to transfer surplus water from the Ken River to the Betwa River to irrigate 10.62 lakh hectares, supply drinking water to nearly 62 lakh people and generate 103 MW of hydropower in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Of the estimated ₹44,604.99 crore cost, ₹12,445.85 crore has been spent up to July 2026. Compensation under the RFCTLARR Act and a special rehabilitation package includes ₹7 lakh (rural) or ₹6.5 lakh (urban) per eligible family, with 93 % of ₹629.87 crore awards already disbursed. The Ministry of Electronics & IT’s Chips to Start‑ups (C2S) Programme aims to bridge the semiconductor talent gap by training over 68,000 students and targeting 85,000 industry‑ready graduates at B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD levels. It has provided advanced EDA tools from major vendors to 332 academic institutions, enabling 254 chip designs (175 at 180 nm node in SCL, Mohali and 79 at overseas foundries). In Andhra Pradesh, 23 institutions received tool access amounting to 4.34 lakh tool‑hours, and four research projects – covering RISC‑V, hardware accelerators, neuromorphic and AI co‑processors – have been financially supported. The programme reflects the government’s policy to develop a robust semiconductor design ecosystem and skilled workforce.

The Electronics Hardware Technology Parks (EHTP) Scheme, a 100 % export‑oriented programme under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, recorded 79 units in FY 2025‑26, up from 70 in FY 2023‑24. Export earnings from these units reached an estimated ₹11,102 crore in FY 2025‑26, compared with ₹9,678 crore in FY 2023‑24. The scheme provides duty‑free import of capital goods and raw materials, permission for Domestic Tariff Area sales, and streamlined customs and single‑window clearances as per the Foreign Trade Policy 2023. STPI has automated statutory services and replaced case‑by‑case import permissions with blanket approvals to accelerate investment and participation.

TRAI’s Independent Drive Test (IDT) conducted from 15‑19 June 2026 across Shimla, Solan and the highway between them evaluated mobile network quality for Airtel, BSNL, RJIL and VIL. The test measured coverage gaps, call drop rates, call‑silence instances, and data download/upload throughput on 2G‑5G networks. Coverage gaps were highest for VIL (≈25 % of samples) and lowest for RJIL (≈0.8 %). Dropped calls ranged from 1/411 (Airtel) to 20/387 (VIL) in Shimla, while download speeds varied from 10.30 Mbps (VIL) to 163.01 Mbps (RJIL). Similar variations were observed in Solan and on the highway route. Findings have been shared with the service providers for corrective action and are publicly available on the TRAI website.

The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, delivered the National Flag (Tiranga) by drone from Mandi Head Post Office to Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh on the eve of Independence Day. The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth approximately Rs 1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited for Loiter Munition Systems, munitions and accessories for the Indian Army. The agreements were executed in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh on 14 August 2026. President Smt. Droupadi Murmu approved a set of gallantry awards for Indian Air Force personnel on the eve of Independence Day 2026. The approved awards include the Shaurya Chakra, Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) and Mention-in-Despatches. The Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) was conferred on five personnel: GP Capt Rahul Jagotta, GP Capt Rahul Rawat, WG Cdr Ashish Rajpoot, Flight Lt Yash and MWO Ravinderjit Singh. The approval was announced by the Ministry of Defence on 14 August 2026.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, held a Manak Manthan (Technical Meeting) on 13 August 2026 at its Nagpur Branch. On Independence Day 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that 1,057 personnel from the Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence and Correctional Services received gallantry and service medals. A total of 301 Medal for Gallantry (GM) awards were conferred – 272 to police personnel and 29 to fire service personnel – with recipients drawn mainly from Left‑Wing Extremism‑affected areas (197), Jammu & Kashmir (51), the North‑East (12) and other regions (41). Additionally, 92 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 664 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) were awarded, the majority going to police (83 PSM, 606 MSM) followed by fire, civil defence/home guard and correctional services. The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises has invited 100 beneficiaries of the PM Vishwakarma Scheme from the Delhi‑NCR region as ‘Special Guests’ to attend the 80th Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort on 15 August 2026.
