DRI uncovers another clandestine drug manufacturing unit in Maharashtra
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted a week‑long intelligence‑led operation in Maharashtra, uncovering an organised network that clandestinely manufactured 1 lakh Tramadol Hydrochloride tablets and 1 lakh Tapentadol tablets. The tablets, concealed in an export consignment at Mumbai Air Cargo Complex, were intended for illegal export to Nigeria. DRI seized the tablets, associated compression machinery, raw materials, and arrested three key accused – the exporter, supplier‑coordinator and manufacturer. The operation highlights the link between illicit drug manufacture and transnational trafficking, and underscores enforcement under the NDPS Act and Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

PARLIAMENT QUESTION: Removal of Invasive Foreign Species in Reserved Forests
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and its line agencies actively identify and monitor invasive alien plant species (IAPS). The Forest Survey of India (FSI) has prepared an album of 45 major invasive species, while the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) has submitted a state‑wise inventory of potential invasive species to the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) to aid the National Management Plan of Invasive Species. Removal and management of these species in Reserved Forests are carried out by State/UT governments under approved forest and wildlife management plans. The National Forest Policy 1988 and the National Working Plan Code 2023 both emphasize ecosystem‑based management, use of native species, and restoration measures that enhance soil moisture, groundwater recharge and overall ecosystem resilience. The information was provided by Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh in a Lok Sabha answer.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh calls for enhancing Private Sector Participation in India’s Biotechnology Ecosystem
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh urged greater private‑sector participation in India’s biotechnology ecosystem, stressing stronger industry outreach to promote indigenous products and attract investment. The meeting with senior BIRAC officials highlighted the BIRAC‑Research, Development and Innovation Fund (BIRAC‑RDIF), a component of the ₹1 lakh crore RDI Fund, which offers collateral‑free loans, equity and hybrid instruments covering up to 50 % of project costs for TRL 4‑9 biotech projects. The first call for proposals, launched on 13 Feb 2026, attracted 198 applications, with eight entities shortlisted for detailed due‑diligence. Plans were also outlined to integrate over 1,700 life‑sciences GCCs (≈1.9 million professionals) with domestic biotech, and to channel CSR funds into biotech‑led health, nutrition and climate‑resilient agriculture initiatives.

PLFS introduced methodological improvements over earlier EUS, including a rotational panel sampling design for urban areas
The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) replaced the Employment‑Unemployment Survey (EUS) with the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) in 2017, incorporating methodological upgrades such as a rotational panel sampling design for urban areas, Computer‑Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) with validation checks, and collection of hours‑worked data. From January 2025, the PLFS design was further strengthened to deliver monthly estimates at the all‑India level and quarterly estimates for rural and urban areas, alongside the traditional annual estimates. The survey retains the employment‑unemployment concepts of the earlier EUS, aligned with the Dantwala Committee and International Conference of Labour Statisticians standards, but users are advised to exercise caution when directly comparing PLFS figures with those of the EUS due to design differences.

Scientists discover unusual ozone layer above North Bay of Bengal
Scientists, led by ARIES under the Ministry of Science & Technology, detected an unusually thick ozone layer at 21‑23 km over the North Bay of Bengal, with concentrations higher than typical for eastern India. Using a coordinated network of 206.5 MHz ST radars, weather balloons, Aura MLS and INSAT‑3DR satellites, and advanced atmospheric models as part of the Phase‑I NetRAD‑ASMA campaign, they found the enhancement persisted for over a day and was linked to transport of ozone‑rich air, downward motion and compression rather than photochemical processes. The results, published in the AGU journal *Earth and Space Science*, provide quantitative evidence of stratospheric ozone redistribution over the Indian subtropics during winter.
New-Age Skills Under PMKVY
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship reported that PMKVY 4.0, a demand‑driven scheme, has released ₹2,392.37 crore for implementation from FY 2022‑23 through FY 2026‑27.
