The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the maiden flight‑test of the ‘Kusha’ long‑range surface‑to‑air missile on 23 July 2026 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. The missile intercepted an electronic target that simulated a high‑speed, high‑altitude aerial threat. According to the release, the system can neutralise fighter jets, missiles, UAVs and large enemy aircraft across a wide range and altitude envelope, with all components—including missiles, radars and the command‑and‑control centre—developed by DRDO laboratories and industry partners. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the test as a milestone that reduces import dependence and boosts India’s air‑defence capability, while Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh monitored the launch and congratulated the team.

PARLIAMENT QUESTION: NUCLEAR FUEL PROGRAMME

7out of 10

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is advancing India’s indigenous thorium‑based nuclear fuel programme under the Three‑Stage Nuclear Power Programme to ensure long‑term energy security and self‑reliance. The first stage uses Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) with limited uranium; spent PHWR fuel yields plutonium for the second stage Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs), with the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) achieving first criticality on 6 April 2026. The third stage will utilise uranium‑233 bred from thorium, with ongoing R&D on Molten Salt Reactors (MSR) and back‑end facilities at Tarapur and Kalpakkam supporting reprocessing and waste management.

The Department of Space outlined several scientific milestones of the Aditya‑L1 solar mission. It captured the first spectroscopic signatures of the onset phase of a coronal mass ejection, provided the first comprehensive analysis of photospheric iron fluorescence across 47 X‑class flares, and recorded unprecedented high‑resolution near‑ultraviolet observations of powerful solar flares, including a detailed view of a rare plasma ejection. By integrating its data with ground‑based measurements, scientists derived insights into intense geomagnetic storms of May and October 2024 and enhanced understanding of Sun‑Earth connections, supporting India’s emerging space‑weather prediction capability. The mission’s technology and data are also feeding into future projects such as the Venus Orbiter Mission and Chandrayaan‑4.
