The first round of negotiations for the India‑Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was concluded successfully in a virtual format from 29 June to 7 July 2026. Led by Chief Negotiator Ujjwal Kumar Ghosh for India and Yusuf Riza for the Maldives, the talks spanned eight technical sessions covering eight policy areas, achieving broad convergence on several issues. On 8 July 2026, Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Maldives Minister Mohamed Saeed reviewed the progress, reaffirming commitment to expedite the Bilateral Investment Treaty and the FTA, and to deepen cooperation in tourism, startups, digital payments, MSMEs and trade. Bilateral trade rose to USD 771.76 million in 2025‑26, a 13.54 % increase over the previous year, underscoring the economic significance of the proposed agreement.

The Ministry of Mines will launch the eighth tranche of auction for critical and strategic mineral blocks on 15 July 2026 in New Delhi. The tranche comprises 20 blocks across nine states, featuring minerals such as molybdenum, graphite, rare‑earth elements, vanadium, lithium and others that are vital for clean energy, advanced manufacturing, fertilisers and defence. With seven tranches completed, 56 of the 88 blocks earmarked for auction have been allotted, giving a success rate of over 63%. The government has also amended the Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2026 to streamline payment timelines, lease execution and refund processes, aiming to improve ease of doing business and attract investors.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released results of an Independent Drive Test (IDT) carried out on 3 June 2026 over the 311.4 km Munabao‑to‑Tanot National Highway (NH‑70) in Rajasthan LSA. Using SIMs of all Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) across 2G‑5G, the test measured coverage gaps, dropped calls, call‑silence instances and data throughput. Coverage gaps (samples with signal < ‑110 dBm for 5G/4G) were highest for VIL (9,227/11,286) and Airtel (5,728/14,130). Dropped‑call ratios were 10/48 for Airtel, 2/6 for BSNL, 3/76 for RJIL and 1/8 for VIL. Average download speeds ranged from 0.35 Mbps (VIL) to 55.05 Mbps (RJIL), while upload speeds varied between 0.75 Mbps (VIL) and 14.03 Mbps (Airtel). The findings have been shared with the TSPs for corrective action and are available on the TRAI website.

The Vice‑President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, will travel to Jaipur, Rajasthan, on 15 July 2026. He will serve as Chief Guest at the valedictory session of the ‘Vidhayi Gaurav Yatra: Former and Sitting Members’ Conclave’, an event organised to mark the 75th anniversary of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.

The Raksha Rajya Mantri, Shri Sanjay Seth, reviewed the Canteen Services Department (CSD) at the 80th Board of Control Canteen Services meeting in Ranchi on 14 July 2026. The meeting addressed budgetary support, depot modernisation, subsidies for electric two‑wheelers bought through CSD, and the induction of products from cooperative bodies such as the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India, KVIC, NACM, and National Cooperative Organics. The minister highlighted the ongoing transformation of CSD as part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, ‘Sehkar se Samriddhi’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives, and visited the Ramgarh depot – one of five pilot depots slated for modernisation. The agenda also included provision of assistive devices for divyangjans of the defence forces and ex‑servicemen.

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas clarified the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme, outlining its two‑decade evolution from a pilot in 2001 to a 20 % blend (E20) mandated from April 2026. Key milestones include the 2013 policy notification, the 2018 National Biofuels Policy, and the 2021 Expressions of Interest for Dedicated Ethanol Plants that secured long‑term purchase agreements and tripartite financing. Blending levels rose from ~8.1 % in ESY 2020‑21 to 20 % in ESY 2025‑26. The programme has saved about ₹1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange, substituted ~316 lakh MT of crude, cut CO₂ emissions by ~952 lakh MT and transferred over ₹1.66 lakh crore to farmers.

The Government has issued a notification dated 30 June 2026 mandating that all operating Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) settle invoices for goods and services procured from MSMEs through RBI‑regulated Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) platforms. CPSEs must disclose invoice details and obtain a statutory auditor’s certificate of TReDS compliance during their annual audit, enhancing transparency. The move aims to provide collateral‑free, invoice‑financing to MSMEs, improving working‑capital access and positioning CPSEs as role models for timely payments, fulfilling a Union Budget 2026‑27 commitment.

On 10 July 2026, the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty‑Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 conducted stakeholder consultations in Goa. Chaired by Shri P P Chaudhary, the Committee met the State Political Executive, the Chief Minister and cabinet ministers, senior state officials, the Chief Electoral Officer, political party representatives, academia, legal experts, and industry bodies such as ASSOCHAM, FICCI and CII. Discussions focused on administrative, logistical, financial and governance implications of simultaneous elections, and the Committee asked state departments to study staggered versus simultaneous election effects before finalising its report.

Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda chaired the 3rd Mission Steering Group meeting of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) on 10 July 2026. The meeting reviewed ABDM’s growth, noting over 93.95 crore ABHA numbers created, 105 crore health records linked, 5.33 lakh health facilities and 9.85 lakh healthcare professionals registered on national digital health registries. Around 2.72 lakh facilities have adopted ABDM‑enabled software and roughly 24 crore Scan & Register tokens have been generated for faster OPD registration. The group emphasized scaling adoption, leveraging AI, strengthening governance and integrating ABDM with programmes such as PM‑JAY, CGHS, ESIC and Nikshay to build a citizen‑centric, interoperable digital health ecosystem aligned with the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision.

India and Australia have signed an agreement granting IP Australia access to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (CSIR‑TKDL). The deal, concluded at the 3rd India‑Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne on 9 July 2026 and witnessed by the Prime Ministers of both countries, aims to help Australian patent examiners identify prior art and prevent patents on knowledge already documented in India’s traditional heritage. The TKDL, established in 2001, contains over 5.2 lakh formulations from Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Yoga, translated into five languages, and has already contributed to the revocation or rejection of more than 375 patent applications worldwide. Implementation will be overseen by senior officials from IP Australia and CSIR.

Union Environment Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav inaugurated the Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Human‑Wildlife Conflict (HWC) at Coimbatore and launched the National HWC Portal. The CoE is intended to serve as a national hub for research, innovation, policy support, capacity building and dissemination of best practices for managing HWC, especially for tigers, leopards and elephants outside protected areas. The portal is a digital platform for data management, knowledge sharing and decision support. A national workshop brought together policymakers, forest managers, scientists and technology experts to discuss species‑specific, area‑specific strategies and technological innovations for mitigating HWC. The first publication ‘Current Status of Human‑Wildlife Conflict in India: An Overview’ was also released.

The 7th Governing Body meeting of the National Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) was chaired by Union Environment Minister Shri Bhupendra Yadav at Coimbatore. The body examined the performance of CAMPA, including NPV and compensatory afforestation activities, CAMPA fund flows for 2025‑26, and the CAG‑certified accounts for FY 2024‑25. It highlighted digital governance steps such as the Digital Annual Plan of Operations for FY 2026‑27, five zonal capacity‑building workshops, a new Geospatial Monitoring & Evaluation System, and the Harit‑SANKALP portal for seed traceability. Funding updates were given for MISHTI (Rs 88.40 crore released, Rs 500 crore additional outlay) and Nagar Van Yojana (Rs 571.50 crore released). The meeting also approved new wildlife‑conservation projects for river dolphins, snow leopards, Indian rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, and Manipur’s sangai.

Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has signed its fourth MoU with the Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board (MBDB) to plant commercial bamboo on 28 hectares of reclaimed land at the Dhuptala Opencast Mine, Ballarpur Area. The project includes 26 hectares of bamboo and 2 hectares of indigenous species (Jamun, Arjun) with 31,108 saplings. WCL will invest about ₹2.57 crore over five years, while MBDB will handle plantation, maintenance, harvesting and marketing. The 15‑year venture aims for pay‑back by year 8, with WCL receiving 85 % of net profit and MBDB 15 % as facilitation charges. The initiative seeks to create a sustainable non‑coal revenue stream, enhance ecological restoration, carbon sequestration, soil conservation, biodiversity and generate local employment, especially for Project‑Affected Persons.

A senior team from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, led by Additional Secretary Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, reviewed the Andhra Pradesh Flue‑Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco marketing season 2025‑26 in Hyderabad. The team met growers, manufacturers, exporters, dealers, trade bodies and the Tobacco Board, examined the market situation and reiterated the government’s commitment to protect growers’ interests. Discussions covered accelerating procurement, facilitating exports, restructuring the Tobacco Board, enhancing the Growers’ Welfare Fund, simplifying registration, digital initiatives and AI‑based grading, as well as expanding export markets and promoting crop diversification. The Additional Secretary expressed confidence that coordinated stakeholder efforts would improve the sector’s long‑term sustainability and global competitiveness.

The Ministry of Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on 680 route kilometres covering the Rewari‑Delhi and Shakurbasti‑Bathinda sections, including feeder branches, of the Delhi Division, Northern Railway. The project, costing ₹206 crore, is part of the nationwide rollout of India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. Kavach is designed to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions by continuously monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when required, thereby enhancing safety, operational efficiency and reliability even in adverse weather such as dense fog.

The Ministry of Railways has approved a ₹175 crore project to add homing facilities for 250 three‑phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power Diesel Shed in Raipur, under South East Central Railway. Homing facilities designate a shed as the primary maintenance base for locomotives, handling scheduled maintenance, safety inspections, repairs and overall upkeep. The initiative aims to augment maintenance infrastructure in line with the rapid expansion of the electric‑locomotive fleet and growing freight and passenger traffic, while better utilising existing assets and creating space for future technological expansion at the Raipur depot.

Major General Varun Malhotra assumed command of the Headquarters Uttar Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area on 10 July 2026. He was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (Bengal Sappers) in 1994 and has over three decades of service, including command, instructional and staff roles, and a stint as an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. The Regional Passport Office (RPO) Pune will conduct a Special Passport Drive on 11 July 2026 at Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) in Pune and Solapur. The drive offers appointments for Normal and Tatkaal categories (fresh and re‑issue) from 09:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs, with applicants required to report 15 minutes before their scheduled slot. It aims to provide earlier appointment dates and improve passport service delivery for citizens with urgent travel needs. Applicants must ensure complete documentation for Normal passports and meet stricter document and eligibility criteria for Tatkaal passports, as outlined on the Passport India website.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued clarifications on the use of 1600xx and 140xx series telephone numbers. 1600xx numbers are mandated for service and transaction calls by entities in the BFSI sector (regulated by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA) and for government‑to‑citizen communications; under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), any tagging, blocking or filtering of such calls is prohibited. 140xx numbers are designated for promotional calls by entities of any sector; users must register with service providers under TCCCPR and can block promotional calls via the Do‑Not‑Disturb (DND) registry. Tagging or filtering of 140xx calls is allowed only through DND blocking.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has amended the Drugs Rules, 1945 to remove the Schedule K exemption for medicinal formulations that contain more than 12 % v/v ethyl alcohol and are sold in quantities exceeding 30 mL. Such products, which previously included tinctures of cardamom, ginger and other aromatic preparations, will now be placed under Schedule H1 and will require a licence under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 as well as a prescription from a registered medical practitioner. The change mandates stricter record‑keeping and is intended to curb diversion and misuse of high‑alcohol drug formulations while maintaining their legitimate therapeutic availability.
