The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, will be in Odisha from 3 to 5 August 2026. On 3 August she will inaugurate the Jagadguru Kripalu University in Cuttack. On 4 August she will travel by train from Bhubaneswar to Berhampur and will perform darshan and aarti at Maa Kandhuni Devi Temple and the Shiva Temple at Taptapani.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted multiple intelligence‑led operations across India in the week ending 31 July 2026. It seized about 9.5 kg of foreign‑origin gold (≈ Rs 14 crore), 14 tonnes of Pakistan‑origin Guggul resin, 4.8 tonnes of red‑sanders logs (≈ Rs 2.5 crore), 2.7 kg heroin, 2 kg of MDMA/amphetamine, 25 kg of hydroponic weed, 9,230 prohibited e‑cigarettes (≈ Rs 3.7 crore), and 14.5 MT poppy seeds plus 14 MT areca nuts (≈ Rs 3.6 crore). Twenty persons were arrested, including five foreign nationals, for smuggling and trafficking offences.

The PIB backgrounder reports that on 31 March 2026 India became effectively free from Left‑Wing Extremism (LWE), with no district remaining LWE‑affected. The achievement resulted from an integrated strategy that combined intensified security operations, expanded physical and digital infrastructure, rehabilitation incentives for surrendered cadres, tribal‑welfare programmes and improved governance. Violence indicators fell sharply – LWE incidents dropped from 870 in 2014 to 33 in 2026 and fatalities from 310 to 11. Major infrastructure investments included 15,189 km of roads, 9,497 telecom towers, 1,804 new bank branches and 663 fortified police stations. Rehabilitation schemes granted up to ₹5 lakh and monthly stipends, leading to 3,927 cadre surrenders between 2024 and March 2026.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the ‘Samudra Manthan’ National Offshore Exploration Scheme as a Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas with a Phase‑I outlay of ₹84,084 crore for implementation up to FY 2030‑31. The scheme aims to de‑risk offshore drilling by providing up to 50 % financial support for deep‑water wells, acquire modern seismic data (₹28,534 crore), drill 60 wells (₹43,200 crore), develop common offshore infrastructure (₹10,000 crore) and set up Oil & Gas Manufacturing and Services Zones (₹2,000 crore). It targets raising domestic oil‑gas production from about 62 MMTOE to 80 MMTOE annually and cutting crude‑oil imports by roughly ₹1 lakh crore per year, thereby enhancing energy security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone, inaugurated and dedicated development projects worth over ₹17,900 crore at Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. The multi‑sectoral initiatives include a new airport named after Alluri Sitarama Raju, a semiconductor plant in Visakhapatnam, modernization of existing ports (Visakhapatnam‑Krishnapatnam) and new ports at Mulapeta and Ramayapatnam, extensive highway and expressway networks, railway projects valued at about ₹1 lakh crore with full electrification, and integration under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana (PM‑VBRY), announced in August 2025, is a two‑year scheme (1 Aug 2025 – 31 Jul 2027) with an outlay of ₹99,446 crore. It aims to generate formal employment for over 3.5 crore people, including 1.92 crore first‑time employees, by providing a two‑part incentive: a one‑time EPF‑wage incentive (capped at ₹15,000) for first‑time workers earning ≤ ₹1 lac/month, paid in two instalments after six and twelve months of service, and an employer incentive of up to ₹3,000 per month per eligible employee for two years (extended to years 3‑4 for manufacturing). In its first year, the scheme has added 72 lakh first‑time workers to the formal sector, with nearly 30 % women, and over 15 lakh beneficiaries have received incentives. Implementation is digital, using EPFO‑linked platforms, Aadhaar‑based authentication, UAN face‑auth on the UMANG app, and DBT to Aadhaar‑linked bank accounts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects in Andhra Pradesh amounting to roughly ₹18 trillion (₹18,000 crore). The launch included a new airport named after Alluri Sitaram Raju, road‑connectivity schemes, energy‑security initiatives, and extensive rail‑infrastructure worth about ₹1 lakh crore. The address highlighted the growth of India’s aviation sector (from 74 airports in 2014 to 166 now) and announced further investment in the second phase of the ‘Udaan’ flight‑fare scheme (₹29,000 crore). The Ministry of Textiles will observe the 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026 with a national function at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, New Delhi. The 136th meeting of the Enforcement Task Force (ETF) of the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) was held on 31 July 2026 to review enforcement actions for the period 14‑24 July 2026. In 11 days, Flying Squads carried out 159 inspections – 22 at construction & demolition (C&D) sites, 97 in the industrial sector and 40 on diesel generator (DG) sets. Based on inspection reports, closure of 17 projects (11 C&D, 6 industries), sealing of 11 DG sets, eight compliance orders and five environmental compensation cases were proposed. Cumulatively, 28,084 units have been inspected, yielding 1,805 closure directions and 1,456 resumption orders. Road‑work inspections covered 106 stretches (≈38 km) in Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram, leading to corrective directives.

Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda chaired a high‑level meeting to examine the expansion of Project SARATHI, a youth‑led patient‑assistance initiative, across hospitals and medical institutions. The meeting reviewed its implementation at PGIMER, Chandigarh, where more than 2,500 volunteers logged over 1.5 lakh service hours, reducing patient navigation time by 26 %. Ministers discussed integrating SARATHI with the MY Bharat programme, establishing structured orientation, training, digital monitoring and safeguards to ensure volunteers support non‑clinical tasks. The Union Textiles Minister, Shri Giriraj Singh, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to revamping India’s cotton ecosystem during the 56th Foundation Day of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). The Ministry highlighted that CCI procured over 522 lakh quintals of seed cotton in the 2025‑26 season, transferring ₹41,530 crore directly to farmers’ Aadhaar‑linked accounts. The Minimum Support Price for seed cotton was raised by about 7 percent for the 2026‑27 season. The newly launched ‘Kapas Darshan’ bulletin, distribution of modern farm equipment, and four MoUs—including partnerships with ICAR‑CIRCOT, GIZ, and private firms—aim to boost productivity, quality, market access, and climate‑smart practices under the ₹5,659 crore Cotton Productivity Mission – Kapas Kanti.

Under ‘Operation Vajra’, the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) Madhya Pradesh Unit seized eight counterfeit‑medicine godowns and an illicit manufacturing facility in Gaya and Masaurhi (Patna), Bihar. The operation led to the seizure of 68,200 Tramadol tablets, 59,000 other tablets, 52,542 bottles of Codeine syrup, 21,373 Buprenorphine injection ampoules and over 439,000 non‑NDPS tablets, among other medicines. The mastermind was arrested on 22 July 2026 after surveillance, and six additional unauthorised godowns were identified. The seized stock and sealed premises were handed over to the State Drug Administration for legal action, and the illicit manufacturing unit was dismantled under the NDPS Act, 1985.

On 1 August 2026 the Union Government released an additional instalment of tax devolution amounting to ₹1,09,019 crore to State Governments, supplementing the regular monthly devolution scheduled for 10 August 2026. Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal, has upgraded its post‑retirement welfare framework for over 4.5 lakh retired employees. In partnership with the Coal Mines Provident Fund Organisation (CMPFO), CIL accelerated digital pension administration through the C‑CARES portal, cutting average claim settlement time from 30 days to 10 days and enabling same‑day issuance of Pension Payment Orders and settlement of CMPF dues. The minimum pension under the Coal Mines Pension Scheme was raised to ₹1,000 per month for about 40,000 pensioners. Around 1.13 lakh retirees are covered by the Contributory Post‑Retirement Medicare Scheme, accessing cashless treatment at 532 empanelled hospitals with coverage up to ₹25 lakh (executives) and ₹8 lakh (non‑executives). PF disbursement rose 19.5% to ₹13,608.8 crore and pension disbursement 22.9% to ₹6,427 crore in FY 2025‑26.

Union Minister Manohar Lal, Housing and Urban Affairs, inspected the Bhalswa Dumpsite on 1 August 2026. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi reported that 99.07 lakh MT of legacy waste had been remediated up to 31 July 2026, with the remaining mound slated for clearance by 15 October 2026 and waste accumulated up to March 2026 to be cleared by 31 December 2026. The minister directed the newly awarded work for processing fresh waste at the landfill to be expedited, emphasizing accelerated remediation and scientific management of incoming waste. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal in the 135th Mann Ki Baat (28 June 2026) to conserve every drop of rainwater, Odisha’s ‘Catch the Rain 2026’ campaign has combined extensive public awareness with concrete water‑conservation actions. The state conducted 968 IEC activities—including street plays and folk performances—across districts, with Khordha leading (230 activities). It built 905 rain‑water‑harvesting and groundwater‑recharge structures (849 rooftop systems and 56 recharge shafts) and restored 98 traditional tanks under the State Plan’s Improvement to Tanks and Minor Irrigation Projects Scheme. Plantation drives at water‑infrastructure sites further support soil stability and infiltration, enhancing long‑term water security.

The Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF‑SC), administered by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, provided ₹4.98 crore in 2018 to Smart‑Waves Technologies Private Limited, a Hyderabad‑based electronics manufacturing firm founded by SC entrepreneur Mr Mallikharjuna Rao Yelisela. The fund’s equity and convertible debenture support enabled the company to set up an advanced EMS unit, procure specialised equipment, and expand into defence, aerospace, industrial, automotive and EV sectors. The enterprise now employs 128 people (40 SC and 88 non‑SC), with women constituting over 50 % of the workforce, has assets of ₹8.41 crore, annual revenue of ₹18.87 crore and net worth of ₹22 crore, and supplies to HAL, BEL, ISRO and other defence clients.

Smartgreen Aquaculture Private Limited, founded by Scheduled Caste entrepreneur Aditya Rithvik Narra in Ranga Reddy District, Telangana, has set up India’s first advanced Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) facility for rainbow trout. The venture, backed by a ₹15 crore grant from the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF‑SC) in 2022, boasts a water‑circulation capacity of 36 lakh litres and an annual production capacity of 360 tonnes. The project has generated 25 jobs, created assets worth ₹40 crore, and achieved a net worth of ₹8 crore, while promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and inclusive entrepreneurship.

Rear Admiral Vidhyadhar Harke, VSM assumed command of the Maharashtra Naval Area on 31 July 2026, succeeding Rear Admiral Shantanu Jha, NM. Commissioned in 1993, he is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College and Naval War College, and has commanded INS Jalashwa and the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. Previously, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Western Naval Command and as Flag Officer Sea Training in Southern Naval Command. As the Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area under Western Naval Command, he will oversee local naval defence operations, infrastructure projects, community outreach, and coastal security in coordination with the Indian Coast Guard and state authorities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre – Viveka Smaraka – in Mysuru, Karnataka, offering obeisance to Goddess Chamundeshwari. He linked the centre’s launch to the legacy of Swami Vivekananda, the Ramakrishna Mission and local scholars, and highlighted the role of youth in driving India’s economic growth, AI, deep‑tech and space achievements.
