NBA to Mark 23rd Foundation Day tomorrow with significant progress in Access and Benefit Sharing
The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is marking its 23rd Foundation Day on October 1, 2026, highlighting significant progress in the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. Since 2008, the NBA has released over Rs. 278 crore through ABS and disbursed more than Rs. 200 crore to over 10,500 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs), Union Territory Biodiversity Councils (UTBCs), forest departments, and research institutions. The funds support biodiversity conservation, community benefits, and local livelihoods. India operates a three-tier institutional architecture for ABS, and the framework incorporates digital e-filing systems, regulatory reforms, and alignment with international commitments like the Nagoya Protocol and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
