Cabinet approves Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme
The Union Cabinet has approved the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS), with a budgetary outlay of Rs.10,000 crore up to FY 2039-40. Announced initially in the Union Budget 2026–27, the scheme aims to establish a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India, lower import dependence, and strengthen supply-chain resilience. It comprises three key components: Interest Subvention Assistance (ISA) of Rs.859 crore for greenfield and brownfield expansion loans, Operational Expenditure Assistance (OEA) of Rs.8,891 crore to bridge the cost gap for containers meeting global standards, and Testing and certification assistance of Rs.150 crore. The scheme is projected to increase domestic manufacturing capacity ten-fold up to 7.5 lakh TEUs and create thousands of jobs.
