From Financial Hardship To Recovery: Mohan Lal’s Journey

The journey of Mohan Lal, a 65-year-old waste picker from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, illustrates the impact of social protection and healthcare support for vulnerable workers. Earning a modest daily income, he faced a severe financial hurdle upon being diagnosed with a heart blockage requiring specialized treatment. Through his enrollment under the Waste Pickers component of the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme, he received an Ayushman Card under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). This enabled him to receive fully covered medical treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi, allowing him to recover, return to work, and support his family.
