NHAI Issues Guidelines for Upgradation, Maintenance and Smart Monitoring of Toilet Facilities & Parking at National Highway Toll Plazas
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued guidelines for the upgradation, maintenance, and smart monitoring of public toilet facilities and designated parking areas at National Highway toll plazas. The initiative focuses on cleanliness, safety, accessibility, round-the-clock services, and technology-based monitoring. Key aspects include technical assessment and rehabilitation of existing toilets, lighting and CCTV surveillance for female users and families, universally accessible toilets for people with disabilities, and provisions for future Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure in parking areas. Technology-based monitoring will track utilities and integrate with NHAI's central digital platform, complemented by citizen feedback through QR codes via the Rajmargyatra app and touchscreens. The guidelines also mandate mechanised desludging, prohibit manual entry into sewer lines, and institute performance-based accountability through structured inspections and penalties.
