Industrial Pollution Abatement: Sustainability through Regulations under Namami Gange
Industrial pollution abatement under the Namami Gange Programme has evolved from conventional enforcement to continuous compliance, scientific monitoring, and resource efficiency. Key interventions include annual inspections of Grossly Polluting Industries (GPIs) by independent technical institutes, sector-specific charters for high pollution-load sectors like pulp and paper, sugar, distillery, textile, and tannery, and monitoring of Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs). According to the source, compliance in the Ganga basin rose from 39% in 2017 to 86% in 2025, while Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) load declined significantly. The framework integrates cleaner production, water reuse, and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) to shift from mere pollution control to pollution prevention and sustainable industrial production.
