Urban Transformation: Building Greener, More Sustainable Cities
The PIB backgrounder details sustainable urban transformation initiatives across various Indian cities under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Goa's Saligao facility processes 250 metric tons of wet and dry waste daily into biogas, electricity, and compost. Gandhinagar in Gujarat promoted the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and citizen engagement during Zero Waste Week. Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh implemented technology-enabled waste management systems, including an Online Waste Management System, RFID tags, GPS-tracked vehicles, and facial recognition for sanitation workers. Lastly, Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh registered an international carbon credit project verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), becoming the first urban local body in Uttar Pradesh and the second in the country to turn waste into carbon value by replacing streetlights with LEDs and adopting wet waste composting.
