Source-grounded summary

The Department of Consumer Affairs is expanding the Legal Metrology verification infrastructure across the country through Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs). Following amendments to the Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2013, the scope has expanded to cover 23 categories of weighing and measuring instruments, including healthcare, energy, transport, and clean-energy sectors. Fresh applications from industries, laboratories, and technical institutions are currently under process in consultation with State Legal Metrology Departments, with 51 GATCs already recognised. Furthermore, several States have notified their own GATC Rules in alignment with the amended central framework to supplement state infrastructure, support Ease of Doing Business, and reinforce consumer protection.
