Nuclear Energy in India
India's nuclear energy programme operates under stringent regulatory oversight, multiple safety layers, and comprehensive emergency preparedness to provide low-carbon electricity and support diverse applications. Currently, India operates 24 nuclear reactors across seven sites with an installed capacity of 8.78 GW, with additional units under construction or preparation, aiming for 100 GW by 2047 under the Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat. Beyond power generation, atomic energy contributes to healthcare, agriculture, food preservation, critical minerals exploration, semiconductor manufacturing, and green hydrogen production. The framework is governed by the SHANTI Act, 2025, and overseen by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), integrating robust design-level safety measures, radioactive waste management, and multi-level emergency response mechanisms.
