The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a fire incident on August 24, 2026, at the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the District Women's Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra. The incident, reportedly caused by a blast in a ventilator machine, resulted in the death of three newborns and injuries to four others out of nine infants present. Observing that these events constitute a serious violation of human rights, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra.
