The Raksha Mantri and the West Bengal Chief Minister virtually presided over the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for five defense expansion projects undertaken by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited (YIL), with a total investment of approximately Rs 3,500 crore. GRSE's three projects span Kidderpore, Shalimar (Howrah), and Raichak (South 24-Parganas) to upgrade shipbuilding, ship repair, and commercial vessel construction capabilities, including warships up to 200 metres. YIL's two projects at the Metal and Steel Factory in Ishapore involve a 3,000-ton Heavy Duty Hydraulic Open Die Forging Press and a Radial Forging Plant, aiming to modernize legacy systems from 1976, substitute imports, and secure critical supply chains for heavy ordnance, railways, and nuclear infrastructure.
