From Sanitation Helper to Mechanised Sanitation Entrepreneur: How NAMASTE-SUY Helped Neeraj Build a Safer and Self-Reliant Livelihood

The Press Information Bureau release highlights the impact of the Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) component under the NAMASTE Scheme through the beneficiary journey of Neeraj from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Previously working as a low-paid, vulnerable sanitation helper dependent on contractors, Neeraj received financial assistance in 2023 totaling ₹11,90,400 (including a loan and an upfront capital subsidy) to purchase three tractors fitted with suction machines. The intervention enabled him to transition into an independent mechanised sanitation entrepreneur, eliminating hazardous manual practices, enhancing workplace safety and dignity, and raising his monthly income significantly.
