Department of Fisheries Celebrates 80th Independence Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Empowering Fishers sector and Strengthening the Blue Economy

The Department of Fisheries marked India’s 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026 in New Delhi, highlighting the sector’s contribution to the nation’s Blue Economy. The fisheries and aquaculture sector provides livelihoods to about 3 crore fishers and fish‑farmers and accounts for 8 % of global fish output, making India the world’s second‑largest producer. Since 2015, the government has invested ₹39,272 crore through schemes such as the Blue Revolution Scheme, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and its sub‑scheme Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah‑Yojana (PM‑MKSSY). The release details the PM‑MKSSY scheme, approved in February 2024 with a ₹6,000 crore outlay, aimed at formalising the unorganised sector, providing digital identities, finance and incentives, and strengthening value‑chain efficiencies. Youth, fishers and fish‑farmers were recognised for their role in advancing a sustainable Blue Economy.
