India's Defence Strength

The PIB backgrounder notes that India’s defence sector has transformed over the past decade, achieving greater self‑reliance and global credibility. The defence budget grew 3.1‑fold to ₹7.85 lakh crore in 2026‑27, while capital expenditure rose 2.3‑fold to ₹2.19 lakh crore. Indigenous production reached a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025‑26 (76% public, 24% private) and exports surged 56‑fold to ₹38,424 crore, covering 80+ countries. R&D allocation more than doubled to ₹29,100.25 crore, with 25% opened to industry. Key reforms – DAC approvals, DAP 2020, DPP 2016, and the 2026 draft DAP – aim for up to 60% indigenous content, while schemes like iDEX, ADITI and the Technology Development Fund support startups and technology transfer.
