Jal Jeevan Mission Clocks Seven Years of Rural Transformation: Rural Drinking Water Tap Coverage Surges from 16.7% to Over 82%

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched on 15 August 2019, reports that rural household tap water coverage has risen from 16.72 % (3.23 crore households) at inception to 82.24 % (15.91 crore households) today, an increase of over 12.68 crore connections. A total of 188 districts, 1,090 blocks, 1.01 lakh Gram Panchayats and 2.04 lakh villages have been certified ‘Har Ghar Jal’. Additionally, 9.34 lakh schools (90.86 %) and 9.73 lakh Anganwadi centres (86.21 %) now have tap connections. The mission has been extended to December 2028 and is shifting to JJM 2.0, emphasizing source‑sustainability measures such as rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and community‑led water‑quality monitoring via the JJM‑IMIS portal.
