Strengthening India’s Space Sovereignty
The PIB backgrounder notes that India’s space ecosystem has grown from a single start‑up in 2014 to about 440 registered start‑ups by August 2026, driving the space economy to USD 9 billion and projected to reach USD 40‑45 billion in ten years. Private investment rose nearly six‑fold to USD 618.5 million by March 2026, with 113 authorisations granted to 52 non‑government entities, including 18 start‑ups. The Indian Space Policy 2023 and liberalised FDI rules (up to 74% for satellite manufacturing) have expanded private participation, while NSIL’s revenue grew from ₹321.77 crore (FY 2021‑22) to over ₹3,000 crore (FY 2024‑25). The Earth Observation PPP, IN‑SPACe seed fund, ₹1,000 crore venture fund and other schemes support this growth, positioning India as a global space‑launch hub and enhancing strategic autonomy.
