NHRC, India takes <i> suo motu </i> cognizance of reported death of 19 CRPF personnel between January to May 2026, as per the official data compiled by CRPF

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that 19 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel died by suicide between January and 22 May 2026. The CRPF data shows 59 suicides in 2025, the highest in the last five years, and a total of 281 suicides over the past five years, with about 216 occurring on duty. The NHRC has issued notices to the Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs and the CRPF Director General, seeking a detailed report within two weeks, citing possible violation of the right to life of the personnel.
