PARLIAMENT QUESTION: AI AND GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR WEATHER FORECASTING

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has operationalised three AI‑based global weather models to aid forecasters in predicting severe weather events and improving forecast accuracy. It has also developed the Multi‑Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (MHEW‑DSS), a Web‑GIS platform that integrates geospatial technologies with meteorological observations, numerical models and impact‑based forecasting, and is publicly accessible. MHEW‑DSS delivers sector‑specific advisories to central and state authorities, disaster‑management agencies, communities and industries, supporting public safety, health, agriculture, energy management and disaster preparedness. MoES has signed MoUs with several Odisha institutions for collaborative research in monsoon, weather, climate and ocean sciences. The Government is implementing Mission Mausam, a central‑sector scheme aimed at making India a “Weather‑ready and Climate‑smart Nation” by strengthening observation and early‑warning capabilities.
