Coal Supply Position for Power Sector Remains Adequate; Production and Despatch Register Strong Growth in July 2026

The Ministry of Coal reported that in July 2026 India’s coal production rose to 69.75 million tonnes (MT), a 7.51 % increase over July 2025’s 64.88 MT. Coal dispatch grew to 86.85 MT, marking an 18.03 % YoY rise, while receipts at thermal power plants reached 68.83 MT, up 13.41 % from the previous year. As of 04 August 2026, coal stock at thermal plants was 34.55 MT, and combined with 113 MT at pitheads and in transit, total available stock stood at about 148 MT – enough for roughly 62 days of power‑sector consumption. The ministry highlighted its focus on uninterrupted coal supply to meet the nation’s energy needs.
