PARLIAMENT QUESTION: ISRO-SUPPORTED SPACE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS IN JAMMU & KASHMIR

The Department of Space reports that over the past five years ISRO has deployed satellite‑based applications across Jammu & Kashmir. Twelve communication satellites now cover the Union Territory, supporting telecom and broadband services. Projects include the Satellite Integrated Landslide Assessment and Alert System (SILAAS) for landslide mapping and alerts, glacial‑lake inventories under the National Hydrology Project, watershed monitoring for the Integrated Watershed Management Programme and PM‑Kisan, urban waterbody mapping under AMRUT 2.0, Geo‑MGNREGA planning, National Wetland Inventory, desertification monitoring, and long‑term ecological research. Funding details for seven projects are listed, with the largest allocation (Rs 220 lakhs) to the Space‑based Information Support for Decentralised Planning project. ISRO also runs training workshops, has established the Satish Dhawan Centre for Space Science at Central University of Jammu, and supports tele‑education and tele‑medicine, including the 2024 launch of HTS GSAT‑N2 for broadband connectivity.
