Time-Bound Recognition and Accreditation Reforms in Higher Education

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has created multiple digital portals—including those for granting autonomous status, deemed‑to‑be university status, and for the Distance Education Bureau (DEB)—to promote transparency in Indian higher education. A unified online portal for 2(f) and 12B status has also been launched after stakeholder feedback. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Government introduced the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, which mandates technology‑driven single‑window interactive systems for regulating higher‑education institutions, aiming to simplify processes, reduce discretion, and enhance accountability. The Bill is currently under examination by a Joint Committee of both Houses of Parliament, as disclosed by Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar in the Rajya Sabha.
