Student Composition in IITs, IIMs, IISERs and Central Universities

The Ministry of Education’s AISHE data for 2023‑24 shows total intake of 34,553 in IITs, 9,956 in IIMs, 2,642 in IISERs and 2,76,988 in Central Universities, with enrolments of 1,14,305 (IITs), 15,445 (IIMs), 6,886 (IISERs) and 4,11,643 (CUs) respectively. Gender‑wise enrolment totals 3,83,824 males, 35,534 females and 6 transgender students across these institutions. The share of SC/ST/OBC students has risen compared with 2014‑15. The government plans new research parks in five IITs (outlay Rs 11,828.79 cr) and five university townships (2026‑27). Reservation in Central Educational Institutions (2006) mandates 15% SC, 7.5% ST and 27% OBC seats, complemented by scholarships and fee reductions.
