Mental Health of Students
The Ministry of Education’s press release notes that the National Crime Record Bureau’s Accidental Death & Suicide in India (ADSI) reports document student suicides and their causes – family problems, love affairs, illness and examination failure. It cites the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on student wellness and holistic development. The Ministry’s MANODARPAN programme provides a toll‑free helpline, live sessions (‘Sahyog’) and webinars (‘Paricharcha’) for psychological support. The UGC has issued advisories (Jan 2023) and guidelines (Apr 2023) on suicide prevention, stress mitigation and physical fitness in higher‑education institutions. Further, the Ministry released guidelines (July 2023) for emotional well‑being in HEIs and regulations for coaching centres (Jan 2024) mandating counselling and fee transparency. Capacity‑building activities – fortnightly faculty sessions, national well‑being conclaves (Nov 2024, Nov 2025) and a regional workshop (July 2026) – have engaged over 4,000 faculty members.
