FLOOD MITIGATION MEASURES IN THE NORTH EASTERN REGION
The Union Government, through the Centrally Sponsored Flood Management and Border Areas Programme (FMBAP), has provided Rs 2,536.96 crore as central assistance for 263 flood‑management projects in the North‑Eastern States up to March 2026. The Central Water Commission (CWC) now issues short‑range flood forecasts at 360 stations (including 53 in the North‑East) with a 24‑hour lead time and has developed a basin‑wise model that offers a 7‑day advance forecast. These forecasts are disseminated via the Flood Forecasting System website, the Advanced Flood Forecasting portal, the Common Alert Protocol platform, and social media channels. The Ministry of Jal Shakti has also issued a technical guideline on Flood Plain Zoning (FPZ) and the Brahmaputra Board has prepared 52 master plans covering structural and non‑structural flood‑mitigation measures for the region.
