Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication Systems

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued a draft notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, introducing Vehicle‑to‑Vehicle (V2V) communication systems on Indian roads. The 5.875 GHz‑5.925 GHz band has been exempted from licensing by the Department of Telecommunications (G.S.R. 466(E), 10 June 2026). Vehicles of categories L, M and N manufactured on or after 1 Oct 2027 must comply with AIS‑230, and those manufactured on or after 1 Oct 2028 must be fitted with V2V systems meeting AIS‑230 specifications. AIS‑230 defines technical, performance, environmental and security requirements for factory‑installed C‑V2X units, covering use‑cases such as Emergency Brake Alert and Forward Collision Warning. The draft invites comments for 30 days before finalisation.
