Commercial Coal Mining: Fuelling India's Journey Towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The Ministry of Coal notes that coal supplies about 55 % of India’s primary energy and over 70 % of electricity generation. Domestic production crossed the 1 billion‑tonne mark for two consecutive years (FY 2024‑25: 1,047.52 MT; FY 2025‑26: 1,040.08 MT). Commercial coal mining was launched on 18 June 2020, allowing private participation and a revenue‑sharing model indexed to the National Coal Index. Since then, 141 mines have been auctioned in 14 rounds, with 123 awarded to private entities, yielding an average revenue share of 24.17 %. The sector’s revenue to the exchequer rose from Rs 461 crore (FY 2014‑15) to Rs 5,553 crore (FY 2025‑26).
