PARLIAMENT QUESTION: EXPANSION OF NUCLEAR POWER CAPACITY

The Department of Atomic Energy reports that 20 nuclear reactors are under implementation: 10 under construction/commissioning and 10 in pre‑project activities. Projects under construction include RAPP‑8 (1 × 700 MW), KKNPP‑3&4, KKNPP‑5&6 (each 2 × 1000 MW), PFBR (1 × 500 MW), GHAVP‑1&2 (2 × 700 MW) and KAIGA‑5&6 (2 × 700 MW). Pre‑project projects comprise GHAVP‑3&4, Chutka‑1&2, Mahi Banswara‑1&2 and ‑3&4 (each 2 × 700 MW) and FBR‑1&2 (2 × 500 MW). Approximately 8,000 persons may be employed per construction project, falling to about 2,000 (direct + indirect) once operational; the FBR project estimates 650 direct and 3,600 indirect jobs. Safety is overseen by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) through multiple reviews. Additionally, BARC and TMC have developed the “90Y‑BhabhaSphere” for radio‑embolisation of liver tumours, approved by the Radiopharmaceutical Committee and produced by BRIT.
