PARLIAMENT QUESTION: HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT AND INDIGENOUS SPACE TECHNOLOGY

The Department of Space announced that the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India's first indigenous space station with five modules, is slated for establishment by 2035. The Union Cabinet approved the development and launch of the first module (BAS‑01) by 2028 in October 2024, and the baseline design review and system engineering for BAS‑01 have been completed with 31 design documents released. Under the Gaganyaan programme, work on the Human‑Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3), orbital module, crew escape system, ground infrastructure, flight operations, communication network, and crew recovery is underway; precursor missions TV‑D1, IADT‑01 and IADT‑02 have been completed, and the first uncrewed mission (G1) is in advanced stages. Docking systems and a refuelling mechanism demo have been developed, and the government has approved indigenous development of critical human‑spaceflight technologies such as flight suits, view‑ports, crew seats and docking technology, with prototype hardware in progress.
