Rail Safety Strengthened Through Technology, Infrastructure Upgrades and Enhanced Maintenance; Only 2 Consequential Train Accidents So Far in 2026-27

The Ministry of Railways reports a sharp fall in consequential train accidents, from 135 in 2014‑15 to 16 in 2025‑26 (88 % reduction) and only 2 up to June 2026. The Accident Index fell from 0.11 to 0.01 (91 % reduction). Safety‑related expenditure rose to Rs 1,20,389 crore in 2026‑27. Technological upgrades include Kavach 4.0 commissioned on 2,569 route km covering Delhi‑Mumbai and Delhi‑Howrah corridors, electronic interlocking at 6,671 stations, and 10,395 level‑crossing gates installed. Additional measures span track‑circuiting, ultrasonic flaw detection, LHB coach replacement, and elimination of all unmanned BG level crossings by Jan 2019.
