GAIS FOR FISHERMEN

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a total outlay of Rs 20,750 crore since FY 2020‑21. Under PMMSY, the Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS) provides fishermen with insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh for death or permanent total disability, Rs 2.5 lakh for permanent partial disability and Rs 25,000 for hospitalization, with premiums shared 60:40 between Centre and State (90:10 for Himalayan & North‑Eastern States; Union Territories funded fully by Centre). An average of 35.74 lakh fishermen have been enrolled annually (2021‑22 to 2025‑26). Annexures detail yearly claims filed, approved, rejected and total compensation paid, amounting to over Rs 21 crore in FY 2025‑26 alone.
