TRADITIONAL FISHERFOLK IN KERALA

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying reports that the Department of Fisheries, GoI is implementing several schemes for the holistic development of the fisheries sector in Kerala, including the Blue Revolution Scheme, Kisan Credit Card extension to fisheries, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the new Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Yojana (PM‑MKSSY). Under PMMSY, approvals worth Rs 1413.91 crore have been given for activities such as livelihood support during fishing bans, procurement of boats and nets, modern coastal fishing villages, climate‑resilient villages, bivalve cultivation, cage culture, ornamental fisheries, fish markets, cold‑chain facilities, live‑fish vending centres, training, and harbour development. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas notes that Kerala’s PDS kerosene allocation rose to 22,704 KL for 2025‑26 (up 419.78 % from 2024‑25) with a 1,716 KL adhoc allocation in 2026 and quarterly allocations of 4,068 KL for 2026‑27.
