India Leads the Wilderness in Tiger Conservation

India has emerged as a global leader in tiger conservation, now hosting nearly 70% of the world’s wild tigers. The 2022 All India Tiger Estimation recorded 3,682 tigers across 20 states, based on a survey of over 6.41 lakh km on foot. Project Tiger, a centrally‑sponsored scheme implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has established 58 tiger reserves covering about 84,500 sq km (2.56% of India’s area). The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) oversees scientific monitoring using technologies such as M‑STrIPES, camera‑trap AI tools and Management Effectiveness Evaluation, while India engages in international partnerships like the International Big Cat Alliance and Global Tiger Forum.
