Government Says Future Tribunal Law Will Align with Supreme Court Judgments on Appointments and Judicial Independence

The Supreme Court, in its judgment dated 19 Nov 2025 in Madras Bar Association vs UOI (W.P.(C) No. 1018 of 2021), struck down certain provisions of the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021. The Court held that its judgments apply to the appointments, tenure and service conditions of tribunal members and Chairpersons. The Union Minister of Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, stated that any future statutory provisions will be drafted to align with Supreme Court judgments and will consider the judicial independence of tribunals, as conveyed in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
