Exhaust of 3,000 Litres of Diesel Replaced with Just Water Vapours: The Story of India's Hydrogen Train

India’s first hydrogen‑fuel‑cell train was flagged off on 17 July 2026 between Jind and Sonipat. In its initial run of over 1,200 km it has saved more than 3,200 litres of diesel. The 10‑coach train uses two hydrogen‑driving power cars delivering a combined 2,400 kW, supplemented by lithium‑iron‑phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders. Green hydrogen is stored at up to 500 bar (dispensed at 350 bar) with a capacity of about 3,000 kg, marking the Railway’s first dedicated hydrogen storage facility at Jind. Multiple safety systems monitor leaks, heat, flame and smoke, with automatic shut‑off and ventilation, meeting international standards. A trial on the Delhi route is slated to begin soon.
