Meeting of Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power Held

The Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Power, chaired by Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal, discussed a proposed framework for parallel distribution licensing. The scheme aims to allow multiple electricity suppliers to operate over the existing distribution network by paying regulated wheeling charges, thereby avoiding duplication of poles, lines and substations. It seeks to enhance consumer choice, improve service quality and ensure efficient utilisation of infrastructure while protecting incumbent licensees’ interests and maintaining universal service obligations under the Electricity Act, 2003. The implementation details will be drafted by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, with the model already in practice in Mumbai.
