386 Private FM Radio Channels Operational; Govt Policy Mandates 20% Content in Local Language to Promote Regional Culture

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting reports that 386 private FM radio channels are operational following e‑auctions of 730 FM frequencies in 234 new cities on 9‑10 July 2025, which attracted 18 successful bidders, including nine new entrants. The Private FM Radio Phase‑III policy mandates that at least 20 % of daily broadcast content be in the local language, focusing on local culture, traditions and folk music, and allows broadcasters to use Prasar Bharati towers where available. The government issues Letters of Intent and Grant of Permission Agreements with defined timelines, especially for LWE and aspirational districts, and monitors public‑service announcements and scheme broadcasts, coordinating with broadcasters during emergencies.
