Government Reiterates Legal Obligations of OTT Platforms and Social Media Under IT Rules, 2021

The Government has notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 under the Information Technology Act, 2000. Part III of these Rules obliges OTT platforms not to transmit any content that is prohibited by law. Part II imposes specific due‑diligence duties on intermediaries, including social‑media platforms, requiring them to make reasonable efforts to prevent the display, upload, hosting, storage, transmission or publication of unlawful information.
